Canada division

Hi all, I was wondering if there is a LibriVox in Canada since most stories are PD there, the legal ramifications are astounding though. Canada's copyright i believe is 50 years after publication?

As far as I know, Canada has indeed a 50 years rule; but it's 50 years after the death of the author, not publication. The rule you write of only applies to anonymously published works, if I recall correctly.

Oh ok I heard star trek the old series was PD in canada?

I don't know, of course, but I can't imagine it. Gene Roddenberry only died in 1991.

No "Canada division". We work within LibriVox, and follow 2 sets of copyright laws: Canada (50 full years after death of the author) and US (generally, published in 1922 or earlier - since that's what LV follows due to their servers being in the US).

There's a "Europe division" - legamus.eu - which works on projects that are PD in Europe (70 full years after author death) but not in the USA (generally published in 1923 or later).

And I wouldn't hold my breath about ST:TOS being PD in Canada. I found one post about it on Reddit, but who knows of it's accurate - and the person who posted it doesn't type clear English.

But Gene didn't own Star Trek, CBS/Paramount does, so whats the rule for corporations? Again I still think its 50 years since life of a corporation is technically forever

In the United States a "work for hire" (published after 1978) receives copyright protection until 120 years after creation or 95 years after publication, whichever comes first.

Yeah... No. (a) Wrench is asking about Canada, and (b) Star Trek wasn't published after 1978.

Either way, LibriVox can do nothing with Star Trek, so resolution of this question is not important for us here.
