... that I haven't abandoned any of my projects, I've just had a one-two punch setback, inasmuch as first my microphone went on the fritz, then the laptop computer conked out. Permanently. This message is via a mobile phone.

Sounds like a time-consuming and expensive business to set up your recording studio again, Chris, but we'll be waiting (eagerly but patiently) for your next instalment.

There are a number of USB microphones which will work directly with a mobile phone:
Audio Technica AT 2020+
Blue Yeti
MXL Tempo series
MXL 006.USB
Rode NT-USB

It is something of a pain editing audio on a handheld device, but for short projects it is quite manageable.
