This is actually something I thought was standard issue in all websites that have download sections.

What information would we get from such counters and how would it help us in our activities?

LibriVox web site design is minimalist in the sense that it is just enough to accomplish our main goal - make audio books.

WE do not have a download section, strictly speaking. All the download links point to the files on archive because WE do not host any of the completed files, archive does.

So if you are looking for the download counts of a particular project, you have to go to the archive page for it - where there are indeed download counts, they call them "views"

However, those counts are not 100% accurate: They count downloads per IP per day, one file that you listen to online for 15 seconds to decide you don't like the reader counts as one download; and if you get the whole of War and Peace in its entire .zip file glory, it's one download as well.
