We're charmingly scrappy! And obsessive. And passionate. Check, check, check. Nice article, and the author clearly took time to listen to a /lot/ of our books. He "gets us".

Thanks to the article I discovered librivox 2 days ago. Such a marvelous undertaking! I rushed in to see what this discovery is like. This is my first post. I am in a very wet coastal part of NC. All is well here and my prayers are with all those who are distressed. I hope many "readers of print" will see the article carolin has posted about. I wish I had words to describe how thankful I am to you all. Steve
I am so glad you found us, Steve. I am sure you will find many audiobooks that you will enjoy: there is certainly a vast choice on the most eclectic of subjects. And if you feel you would like to play a more active part in the community, there is always demand for proof-listeners who check recordings for errors before projects are catalogued. Maybe one day you may even like to try recording yourself. What is certain is that you have discovered one of the most friendly communities on the Internet. Have fun here!

This article mentions LibriVox as an important step in the evolution of audiobooks and podcasts.

Well! Right there between "Podcasts" and "Serial"! My goodness, we're so important. :D
I'm glad Hugh left a comment correcting the author's misconception about the original goal of librivox -- we were a podcast before we ever produced a complete audiobook.

I was interested when a Thank You listener mentioned hearing about us on the BBC; Availle pointed me to the right place:
It was on the iPM programme. You do have to listen through the presenter, whom I detest, but the listener is using our recordings to help overcome her insomnia. http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b06wj90z from about 1140-1955.
[We used to have a thread devoted to us appearing in the media, but I couldn't find it.]

Ah yes, I tweeted about this and then forgot to post in this forum .

I was so pleased to hear of this listener's life-enhancing experience of finding LibriVox. It's particularly refreshing to hear of her preference for the volunteer reader, as against a member of the acting profession.
I've often felt irritated that so many people assume the 'professionally' recorded audiobook as the only given standard for reading aloud - as if we LVers all automatically aspired to deliver this kind of product and might therefore be slated (and sneered at) for falling short of it. Personally, I have never tried to do anything but reflect and share my enthusiasm for a chosen book, using my voice to communicate my enjoyment and understanding of the text. I suspect that the interviewee in the BBC broadcast might find my own style too much of a 'performance'; but I'm confident that there's a difference between a well-executed LibriVox project and an actor's paid rendition. Although I subscribe to audible.com, I listen to far more books on LibriVox than I purchase.

"Reading is to the mind as exercise is to the body: we know it’s good for us, but…" suggests how we can make time in our busy lives to read... audiobooks and LibriVox, of course!
The article shows an interesting comparison of the hours spent reading (books, magazines and newspapers) in various countries. It is enlightening, and for some of us (me included, as I'm from the UK) quite depressing.
