You know, a short while ago, I made a commitment to attempt a little simple German reading if I were allowed to pass on a passage that contained some French. (It was a jocular enough exchange, but I was serious.) I haven't used what little conversational German I ever possessed since writing to a pen-pal in Karl-Marx-Stadt in the last few years of the DDR, but since she was able to understand it, I trust I could still make the reading intelligible. Even if my accent is probably weird as.

Anyhow, a chance passing mention of Sophie Scholl in the current fortnightly poem topic ("The Present Crisis") caused it to occur to me that I could honour this commitment if there were ever a German language equivalent Weekly/Fortnightly poem topic for "Die Gedanken sind frei", either sung or recited.

Anyway, just a thought.

There is a Collection of German Poetry here where this would be very welcome, I'm sure:

Opening bat, eh?

Would you be able to point me to a suitable source that is PD in the relevant countries? Fraktur is not a problem.

Most certainly:

In the box on the right, there is a link to a google scan of the original source from 1842.

Oh, are those types of scan PD? I didn't know that. Knowing that now, I'm going to be spoilt for choice! :D

Careful - not all of them are!

In this case, there is a scan on google docs that shows the date in the beginning. Others may have to be examined more closely...

Done.

S.O.T.E. goes L.O.T.E., eh?

Heaven knows what my accent has done to the "old beautiful sound" of the language. Even now, poor hokuspokus must surely be wondering "How has a kangaroo learned to speak, and why did it have to start with the German language?!" :D

I remember seeing a documentary on Hans Litten not long ago and being struck by the poem. I am so glad to be able to read the history behind it and the text.

Thanks SOTE.
