Owing to popular demand we are this special year going to have TWO

LibriVox 10th Anniversary Songs

This is the second one.
  • You don't have to be able to read music, or even to be able to sing!
  • You may sing/speak/shout as much or as little of it as you wish. Extras are welcome - hurrays, whoops and other mad things.
  • This one's a bit different. The lyrics leave spaces for you to add readers' and authors' names. If you listen to singalongaruth, you will hear the names I've sung, but you are free to choose whichever names you wish (except verse 5 which is different, and is a tribute). Don't forget to include your own name somewhere in it! There is room for 24 readers' names in the song, and 6 authors, and obviously I can't include ALL the names you all sing, but I may extend it even further as long as it doesn't sound too silly.
  • I can't use everything, but the more I have, the more fun it will be. Those of you who have done this before know that I will be using as many voices as I possibly can - some bits solo, other bits duets, other bits a massive chorus of voices. EVERYONE will be in it somewhere!
The zip file is here: https://librivox.org/uploads/ruthieg/tenyears.zip. It includes these files:
  • MP3 of melody and accompaniment: tenyears_accomp.mp3.mp3
    MP3 of melody only: tenyears_melody.mp3
PDF of words and melody line only: tenyearsmelody.pdf
Text file of words only: tenyears_lyrics.txt
Also a bonus singalongaruth, with me taking a warts-and-all go at singing it: singalongaruth2.mp3 (and this one is VERY warty)
This is how you do it:
  • Import (or drag) tenyears_accomp.mp3.mp3 into Audacity.
  • In Edit | Preferences | Recording, tick the box that says "Overdub: Play other tracks while recording new one"
  • Click record and sing along while listening using headphones if possible. Put the playback sound down low (or adjust the Gain slider at the left of that track) so that it doesn't get recorded with your voice.
  • Now you should have two tracks. When you are happy with it, just delete the accompaniment track, and export your voice track as an MP3.
  • Don't forget to uncheck the Playthrough box when you have finished.
  • Call your file tenyears2015_yourinitials.mp3, and number it [e.g. yourinitials1] if you upload more than one file.
  • Upload it to my folder RuthieG by 26th July !
Words are also here:
1. Ten years, ten years, and still going strong
Giving our voice to the public domain,
So join with us now as we all sing this song,
[your name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name],
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all,
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

2. Twas twenty oh five when the first book was done
(Freely released to the public domain.)
Then more and more people found out it was fun:
[your name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name],
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all,
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

3. By twenty ten there were thousands to share
(All our recordings are public domain.)
From Shakespeare to Austen, from Wells to Voltaire.
[author's name], [author's name], [author's name], [author's name], [author's name], [author's name],
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all,
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

4. And each year we've catalogued projects galore
(All our recordings are public domain.)
Over six thousand readers and every day more.
[your name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name],
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all,
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all.

This verse slower:

5. And over the years we have friends who have gone,
Passed away from the earth and its pain.
We rejoice that their voices will always live on:
[Denny Sayers] [icyjumbo] [Cynthia Lyons] [Alan Davis Drake] [Bryfee] [Lucy Burgoyne] [Israel Radvinsky] [Gregg Margarite] [Dorothy Lieder]
Remembered with love one and all
Remembered with love one and all.

Back to original tempo:

6. Ten years, ten years, and that's only the start
(Did I say our recordings are public domain?)
So lend us your ears and we'll give you our heart
[your name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name], [reader's name],
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all,
Old Uncle Tom Cobley and all.
Over to you!

Cool lyrics Ruth! Such a pity I can't sing ....

Besides, the 5th verse would be too difficult for me in any case. I teared up just by reading it...
Cheers, Ava.

Julia: No need to sing lots of names, if you don't want to. You can just dum-de-dum or leave them out entirely. I have a sneaking suspicion that your name isn't going to be easy to fit in, but where there's a will there's a way!

Ava: YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE ABLE TO SING! You can do a 'Rex Harrison' (and you can leave great chunks out!).
Despite extensive vocal training after landing the part of Henry Higgins in My Fair Lady (1964), he was unable to sing a note. In the end the director gave up and told him to quasi-speak the whole thing.

And that didn't go too badly, did it?

I made my name fit...

I had to record the last 2 verses separately... the change in tempo tripped me everytime

and I added some German/Austrian authors

it was fun, but more difficult than the boom-deyada

Thank you!!!

And in this chook lotto, there’s a supplementary duck! Well, maybe not a duck. But you’ll know it when you hear it, Ruth.

Here's mine:

https://librivox.org/uploads/ruthieg/tenyears2015_jy0404.mp3

I did a 3 part song, one is the original lead, one is background hums, one is mixed(?) lyrics and chorus.
Sorry for the bad harmony... I didn't get it quite well. :|

But, I really enjoyed it, and cried when I read the fifth verse...
Thank you!

Thank you, Jessie. Yes, there are a few places where it doesn't quite fit together ;), but there is plenty of your lovely singing that I can use..

Here's my attempt -- (length 3:30)

If you listen to singalongaruth, you will hear the names I've sung, but you are free to choose whichever names you wish.
The challenge is trying to get all the names to fit into the rhythm of the song! Well, I gave it my best shot, and hope anyone whose name I mangled will forgive me.
Extras are welcome - hurrays, whoops and other mad things.
There are a few Mad Things appended to the end of the recording.

Here's mine. I flubbed up on the memorial names and a couple other spots, but there's enough good stuff you can use. ;)

Here's mine. I managed to get my name in but it was a bit long. For some reason although I haven't been able to get boom-de-yada out of my head since this one hasn't been as bad. Thanks! I can't wait to hear the finished product!
