This is a reminder to prooflisteners (and soloists and BC's):

Always PL files from the links in the Magic Window, NOT from links posted in the thread or sent by PM or posted anywhere else that is not the MW. This is especially important when you do spot checks of edited files. Soloists and BC's: please update the file link in the MW after a file is edited and reuploaded.

Why?

The files that are linked in the MW are automatically sent to the catalog. If the wrong file is linked in the MW, it will be in the cataloged book. When you are spot checking edits, you're not just checking that the reader made the changes; you are checking that the system will be sending the correct file to the catalog.

When a reader uploads an edited file, its URL is supposed to be exactly the same as that of the original file. This works if the new file has the same name and is uploaded to the same location as the original. However, sometimes the new file's URL is different. Usually the reader doesn't realize the URL is different. And very often, a soloist or BC does not paste the new URL in the Magic Window, because nobody realizes it is different.

So how can an edited file's URL be different than the original's?

1. The file name could be misspelled, have different punctuation, have a capital letter, or omit (or add) the _128kb at the end.
2. The file could be uploaded to the wrong MC folder.
3. The file could be uploaded to a different uploader. We changed uploaders in 2013, and there are still a handful of long-term projects with files on the old uploader. If those files are edited and reuploaded, their URL's will change even if the file names are the same.

Thank you ALL for your work! You see why prooflisteners are so important. :)

Thank you for the reminder and explanation - I hadn't realized the implications of PLing from the MW
