Had a recording session ruined over January by a bunch of Lyrebirds. Gave up and recorded them instead. Any birdwatching folks who would be interested in this short 1.41Mb sound file of their calls, including them mimicking Laughing Kookaburras several times, I'd be happy to send it to the email of your choice. Just drop me a heads-up on xxxxxxx

(I'd suggest the file might go on the LV server as a curiosity, but I do believe that's against policy.)

I think they did an impression of the Whipbird there too at one point. The Bellbirds you can hear in the background are the real McCoy though.

After listening to it, I imagine you'll see why there's NO chance of recording while those birds are at it.

Cheers,
Son of the Exiles

Go ahead and upload it to the xx-Nonproject folder. You've got permission. :) (And remove your email address; it's ripe for spambot harvesting!)

Thanks, Tricia!

Here's the file: https://librivox.org/uploads/xx-nonproject/Lyrebirds_mimicking_Kookaburras.mp3

Cheers,
SOTE

P.S. I was discussing Librivox on Christmas Day when a relative pointed out to me that 'S.O.T.E.', as well as being an abbreviation for 'Son of the Exiles', could also stand for 'Scum of the Earth'. Who knew?

You must live somewhere very pleasant and forested to have attracted the lovely lyrebirds.

(Apparently Australia has the noisiest, most aggressive birds going. From your point of view as a Librivox volunteer, it's only going to get worse -Wikipedia tells us:

"the peak of the breeding season, from June to August, is when they sing with the most intensity. During this peak they may sing for four hours of the day, almost half the hours of daylight.")

Best,

Barbara

Wow, they are noisy indeed... but nice to listen to!

Wikipedia does not seem to have an audiofile of lyrebirds, but I have seen them for other species. Maybe you can upload your file there?

For us, unfortunately, it is not usable: The pd disclaimer is missing...

It occurred to me that people might like to compare the lyrebirds' mimicry to the real kookaburras. The Librivox admins have given me kind permission to put a short MP3 of a kookaburra family in the non-project section, so here is their sound from 2016-01-11.
