Hi,
this page: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Noisecleaning_With_Pics is one of the most often posted pages to help newbies with their 1-minute tests. I would appreciate if anyone could change the picture "Noiseclean4.jpg" or tell me how I can do that. It's from an older version of audacity, having only 3 parameters, and the given parameters that are in the picture don't fit both the new algorithm and the needs of mainly usb microphones. The values that are most often given to the 1-minute newbies are:

Noise reduction: 7
Sensitivity: 0.00
Frequency smoothing: 150
Attack/decay time: 0.10

these should also be changed in the text of chapter 3 then.

Thanks

7 is most often recommended? I use 12 as default.

If no one gets to this today, I'll look at it tonight.

"Ask five economists and you'll get five different answers - six if one went to Harvard."

Ask any five Audacity users how much noise-cleaning to use, and you will get five different answers. I tend to suggest a lower dB number, as over-cleaning is far more detrimental to the voice than under-cleaning. If the noise is that bad, the chances are that you shouldn't be solely using the Noise Reduction effect only anyway, but should be taking out specific frequencies with a notch filter, or using a High Pass Filter to remove very low frequency noise, before a pass of general noise reduction.

That said, one size simply doesn't fit all when you are talking about background noise. It's always better to treat each on a case-by-case basis.

I've changed the picture. The rest of you can debate whether or not to change the text beneath it to lower the suggested noise removal setting. :)
