(Update) Audacity Loudness Normalization: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/loudness_normalization.html
Is this a built-in effect in the new version(s) of Audacity? If so - cool! 8-) That would be very helpful!

P.S. I wonder if it allows clipping, or if it will only normalize up to that level. :hmm:
Tricia,

It was added in May 2020: https://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/New_features_in_Audacity_2.4.0#loudness

I would expect it to at least use a limiter to avoid clipping when applying the loudness normalization effect, but I do not know how it is implemented. The purpose of loudness normalization is to target an average loudness instead of just peak levels, so if the effect was only capable of normalizing the peak levels it would not be very useful.

I recently came across the LUFS setting. It seems that this is the way that broadcast media and streaming services are going (although there are differences by country and service).

If there is some kind of automated levelling applied to Librivox files (as implied by an earlier post), then the level we produce should not matter (as long it is not clipped). Using LUFS-based normalization is irrelevant there.

But there is one area where I think it might be relevant. LUFS is intended to reflect human perception of loudness. If an editor wanted to balance loudness of parts in a DR, using LUFS-based normalization is probably going to work. It's something the editor could apply to each part.

BTW, Audacity supports it: https://manual.audacityteam.org/man/loudness_normalization.html
I find a normalization of 20 LUFS puts my voice into the middle of the checker volume range.
