Hello everybody,

Recently I noticed Audacity on Windows7 accepts 'ID3 tag version 2.4'.
And also Checker doesn't complain about '2.4'.

I've been following this.
http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/How_to_Add_or_Edit_ID3_Tags#Audacity
Audacity for Ubuntu automatically generates ID3v2.4 tags which often are not visible in other applications in other operating systems. Librox uses ID3v2.3 tags. A single command in the terminal window can convert your ID3v2.4 tags to ID3v2.3 tags.
I feel it's time we should accept ID3v2.4 tags. How do you think?

Cheers,
Masa

I can't comment without knowing how our backend software works, Masa san. As you know, we are in the middle of a complex upgrade. Please continue to use the specified ID version for the time being.

Audacity may show/allow ID3 v2.4 tags, but Windows itself doesn't. My Win7 doesn't show them. And even if it did, the majority of Windows users don't have Win7 yet anyway. We'd get a lot of complaints about "missing" ID tags if we switched right now.

Hello Ruth san & Tricia san,

Thank you for your message.

As a reader I can stick to '2.3'. But my problem is as a BC.

Can you check the ID3 tag for the following file? This is uploaded by a Linux user.

http://upload.librivox.org/share/uploads/lz/msw006_propavshayakaloshadobblsa_averchenko_karlkuzmich.mp3

I can read ID3 tags on 'Audacity 2.0.0 on Ubuntu12.04 32 bit', 'Audacity 2.0.2 on Windows7'
and Checker.
Checker shows it's '2.4'.

How can persuade the reader to change ID3 tags, when I can read them?
I usually use Linux. But today I borrowed Windows7 from a local recording group.

I need your advice.

Cheers,
Masa

Vandermast always had this problem and discovered a solution:
However, I have just now installed Kid3-qt, a Linux gizmo for tag-twiddling. If it worked, it was surprisingly easy!
It did work, and his tags are now v2.3.

Downloadable from http://kid3.sourceforge.net/

Win 7 and 8 do not read the Id3 tags for your file listed above Masa-san, also the file specs are not correct - 118 kbps (variable) bitrate with a high DC offset of -36 (-0.1085%)

The currently required specs are clearly stated in all opening posts for all current projects...
Save your recording as an mp3 file using the following filename and ID3 tag format:
File name - all in lowercase: ...... (eg. ....)

ID3 tags (Version 2):
Artist Name: ....
The v2.4 tags do not show up when cataloging and have to be added manually.

Hello Ruth san & David san,

Thank you for your message.

I'm suggesting to accept both V2.3 & V2.4.
aradlaw wrote:Win 7 and 8 do not read the Id3 tags
Are you insisting Audacity & Checker doesn't run on Win7 & 8?
According to my checking both Audacity & Checker runs well on Win7 and shows V2.4 tags.
ID3 tags (Version 2):
Artist Name: ....
This means it accept both v2.3 & v2.4.
aradlaw wrote:The v2.4 tags do not show up when cataloging and have to be added manually.
So I'm suggesting to change the system to accept v2.4 tags.

Cheers,
Masa

No, he means when he has a folder/window open in Windows, listing the files and supposed to show ID tags (or when looking at File Properties in Windows), the ID tags aren't there.

Many PL's don't open the files in Audacity or Checker to see the ID tags. Listeners (end users) may not. How many MP3 players themselves show ID 2.4?

Linux can show ID tags in V2.3 & V2.4 by right clicking. So this was beyond my imagination.

This is also a surprise. Why do they download files just to see ID tags? Let the server show ID tags.

For a Linux user, it's very tedious to add V2.3 tags.
It's technically possible to convert V2.4 tags into V2.3 tags on the server if only alphabets & numbers are used.

In most cases System can add ID3 tags, as ID3 tags are defined when the project is started. Even for collections, once title & author are given, ID3 tags are defined.
If human don't need to add ID3 tags nor check ID3 tags, our work becomes more smooth.

Masa

Such quick fixes of ID tags are in the works in the new Mellon Grant development. Until then, we need V2.3.

Hello Tricia san,

Thank you for your message.
Looks like it's time to close this discussion.

In the future somebody will say,
'Once upon a time, ID3 tags were entered by a human. Can you believe this?'

Cheers,
Masa
