Hi,
I just read about http://www.mediafire.com/ in today's Montreal Gazette.
"There are a lot of free file-hosting services on the Web, but Mediafire is the best yet.
Setting up an account is quick and easy and it's a breeze to upload and download files to the site. Best of all, there are no limits on the number of files you can transfer and there is no limit on file size. What's the catch? I can't find one.
Not only can you use the site as a remote hard drive to safely back up files, but you can also use it as a place to transfer very large files to remote colleagues.
Why bother carrying around a flash drive that you could lose when you can easily store those files online for instant retrieval anywhere with an Internet connection?" (Montreal Gazette, 31 Oct 06)
Mediafire looks promising. All the IT people/volunteers, please take a look and see if it is better than yousendit or not? If it is good, maybe we could use it to upload & download our recordings.

Hi Christina,
Have you tested this out? I just tried to upload two small mp3 files, and both failed at the validation stage. I can see from their blog that it's a new site and they're working on bug fixes etc. Hopefully they'll iron things out.
What we'll need to see is how the links work. Can you post a link in the forum, for the file to download?
David

I just tried it out with a small word document and had no problems. We'll have to see how it does with larger files.
At the end of the upload I was given three possible ways to link to the file. The url to the file itself, the html code for a link, and the BB code.
Here's the test link: http://www.mediafire.com/?bxl7418x4xv

That's great news. I'll give it another try this evening.
they have a nice fast connection -- the download speed for my mp3 hovered around 300kb/s.

Wow, this is insane!
I submitted a 24MB reading just fine, and I'm now testing their servers by uploading a 700 MB file

Kara —I loaded and listed to your file quickly and pleasantly. I mean it downloaded quickly (less than 2 minutes) and it was pleasent to listen to letter two.)kayray wrote:It worked, Gypsy. Testing now with a big mp3... "no signup required" is music to my ears.
