Very good. :)

There's someone interested in doing similar things for convalescent homes and/or prisons... You already know about the project to send to New Orleans libraries...

I'm thinking we'll want a wiki/protocol for Giving Us Away, with addresses, packaging, links, etc to the various organizations. And for actual organizations (prisons, homes, libraries), we'll probably need to keep a running list of what has been burned and donated thus far. (Don't know whether this would be an issue at AnySoldier, since the CDs are sent to individuals, and I'm guessing there are enough individuals on their list that the risk of any one person receiving duplicates would be pretty low.)

I've started a wiki for organizing our donation information http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/DonatingLibriVoxCDs

Very rudimentary, but we'll add as we go.

Catherine,

AnySoldier is a different procedure and I will try to be very clear on the what, where, why, and how. I'm working on that. Yet, I think you are right about there being so many contacts there, that it's likely not to have too many duplicates. I would say the only duplication might be if everyone searched for "audio books."

I did that the other day and only three came up. However, people can send for different reasons, such as home state, type of unit (i.e. medical, etc.), or use their "random contact" button. I am going to send to one that deals with helping soldiers with combat stress, as they visit soldiers in hospitals. They can use them themselves and share them with the wounded soldiers. I also searched under "poetry" and just because "poetry books" were requested; I think they won't mind "audio poetry books." Same goes for ?books? in general. If they like to read, they most likely will be too tired at times; and will enjoy just kicking back and listening. However, they don?t have to request them. Since the audio book industry is about a billion dollar industry; it shows how interested people are (no matter who they are).

I hope I get something up before July 4th, as that would seem appropriate.

Thanks for your input.

Tina,

I?m also glad about having a Main Menu, so to speak, of charity and humanitarian organizations that could use burned books, because that will really help people put their recordings to good use in situations where a CD is necessary versus web downloads. We can all look into more organizations and see if we can get some more contact info. Thank you for starting this Wiki page.

We?ll want to generate a buzz within the specific organizations themselves to pull in their volunteer or community base, as well. That way, both Librivox volunteers and listeners and the organizations? communities can all have the opportunity to participate. The readers here do so much already, so it?s great to tap other avenues for the fulfillment end.

Best,
Nikolle

I?ve started an FAQ for AnySoldier Donations on the Wiki. Please visit: http://librivox.org/wiki/moin.cgi/AnySoldierDonations

I?ll add more information later. I hope it?s clear.

Thanks,
Nikolle

It looks good Nikolle. Perhaps you could add a table of contents that might make it easier to navigate??

Code: Select all

[[TableOfContents([maxdepth])]]

I inserted a Table of Contents with links to the topics on the wiki page.

Here are some basic CD cover templates created in Word, which can be customized. They can be cut out and folded in half to allow for a basic cover and, when the case is opened, the specific CD contents reveal track information including duration of each track and reader name. These are a basic alternative for those covers not designed yet and for those who may not be able to print out color. Feel free to change them as needed.

Nikolle, you ROCK!

edit: there are a couple of minor misspellings :)
For the group project, it should be librivox.ORG, not com.
For the solo project, librivox is spelled with an extra O.

Just wondering if this idea died on the vine or if it was thriving some place else?

(Actually looking for advice for giving CDs of recordings to the local libraries and this seemed like a good project too.)

The USPS used to accept packages marked "Any Soldier/Marine/Sailor/Airman", but can no longer do so for security reasons.
