Try this next time you have word counts to do
This information is in the wiki now. Here is the page http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Word_Count and it is also linked from the Tips for BCs page
If anyone else knows of any useful software/utilities for word-counting they can add it to the wiki page too.
regards
Phil

Hi Phil
Actually I have a question. I am not extremely familiar with firefox, how do I find your script again the next time I need it? I shouldn't need to install it every time, right?

No you don't need to install it every time, one time is good for ever! It will just sit there doing nothing until you visit a Project Gutenberg HTML book page and then firefox will wake it up.

Is anyone aware of a script that works with internet explorer? I don't have the other browsers mentioned. It would sure be easier than coping to Word.

I've been using FireFox so I attempted to use the scripts referenced. http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Word_Count
I downloaded Gressemonkey but the FireFox install link seems to be broken. Is there a new one available? Or another method besides pasting into Word?

Installing the Script
The method of installation depends on the browser (Firefox and Chrome may need to be re-started after installation, Opera does not):
Firefox
1. Greasemonkey You will first need the GreaseMonkey add-on for Firefox which is available from this link.
2. Firefox Install http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/69969 Once you have GreaseMonkey installed, go here and click on the Install button

Hi,
Sadly userscripts.org is no more, but happily some kind soul has made the scripts available at an alternative site:

I'll be certain to check it out.
Do you know where we submit requests to update the Wiki page?

Here are a couple of alternate options for doing word counts.
I use an add-in for Firefox called Word Count
that counts the words in whatever text you have highlighted. For Gutenberg texts, another of our members has written an online app that will do the entire book for you, as long as there are clearly labelled chapters. See this thread

Here is the Word Count tool for Firefox.
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/word-count-tool/
It will tell you it isn't compatible with the latest versions of Firefox, but it still works. Right click and pick WordCount from the menu. It's just not as easy to see the word count as it used to be without the status bar.

Thank you, Jo! I'll try that, right away. I haven't been able to get the other one to work.

Just noticed the link I posted to the other forum thread was not complete. It should be working now.

I'd like to point out that the wiki still has old links to the userscripts web page. How do we update this? Can anybody go in and edit things?
Also, after trying the links in the wiki (before finding this thread), I also found this link: http://get-business-online.com/blog/internet-marketing/word-count-for-firefox/
This tool is really neat. In Firefox, you go here, click and drag the WordCount link onto your bookmarks button, and then all you have to do is highlight some text and click Word Count from your bookmarks.

If you'd give us the wiki page links and what the userscript links on those pages should be, we can change them.

It was mentioned further up on this thread. Here:

I think this is only for the Firefox scripts, but the wiki links for Chrome and Opera don't work either, and I don't know if those scripts are still available elsewhere.peegee wrote:Hi,

Also, the Word Count Plus add-on to Firefox linked to on that same wiki page is no longer supported on current versions of Firefox, but the link I posted above works great!
EDIT:
Actually, here is the javascript given at the link above, and I believe it works in the same way as the Opera bookmark described on the Wiki page:
javascript:d=window.getSelection()+'';%20d=(d.length==0)?document.title:d;%20alert(d.split('%20').length+' words, '+d.length+' characters');
EDIT AGAIN:
This JavaScript also works as a bookmark in Chrome.
