These production counts are breathtaking just on their own, and more so when you consider the amount of time, pre-reading, correction etc. all these readers invest, plus all the proofing and suggestions that happen on top of that. But in the end, do we know what the statistics are on the consumption side? After we give birth to these things, do we have the numbers on how many unique listeners access one or more Librivox productions in a given month?

Dave,

Completed Librivox projects are hosted at Archive. Archive does show a download count on each project page, and there may be information available more broadly for the Librivox catalog (I'll let someone who knows comment on that). But the Archive counts are not entirely reliable, and even if they were, that doesn't capture the whole picture. Imagine my surprise to find that some of my recordings of Charles Spurgeon are posted to YouTube. One of the great things about releasing our material into the public domain is that they can go anywhere. Others can download them and host them on their own site, or they can be copied onto CDs and sold on eBay. No count from Archive is ever going to pick up the full picture of the downstream uses, but its encouraging to hear anecdotes of those uses.

The counts are probably reliable when the counts are working but they do not count unique listeners to the project
They count access from a user 1 time every 24 hours
So to take some extreme examples for a 50 section work

I click on their player or our player, listen for 1 minute , decide the reader is horrible or I don't like the writer much COUNT 1
I download the zip file or all 50 files in a 24 hour period COUNT 1
I decide to listen to a chapter a day online COUNT 50X1 50

Oh goodness, forgot to check and post last night.

But as of Sunday evening, June 1st,
Total number of projects 8381
Number of completed projects 7743
Number of completed non-English projects 1096
Total number of languages 91
Number of languages with a completed work 34
Number of completed solo projects 4325
Number of readers 6385
...who have completed something

64 projects cataloged in May, and already 6 cataloged in June, with 416 projects cataloged 2014 YTD. Somehow that math doesn't work out, but we've got a rogue project showing up in the June numbers somewhere . . .

As of June 1 when the numbers were pulled there are 13 more uncompleted projects (i.e. in progress, on hold, or abandoned) than there were on May 1.

As of...
Dec 31/Jan 1 - 632 uncompleted projects
Feb 1 - 630
March 1 - 639
April 1 - 634
May 1 - 625
June 1 - 638

Thought I'd toss out those numbers. I found them interesting. We stay fairly steady on number of uncompleted projects.

While not a monthly statistic, I found this interesting today (at 11:10 AM EDT):

Total number of projects 8402*
Number of completed projects 7766
Number of completed non-English projects 1100
Total number of languages 91
Number of languages with a completed work 34
Number of completed solo projects 4343
Number of readers 6402*
...who have completed something

*exactly 2,000 more projects than readers ...

It would be cool, if the big 10k milestone would coincide with the 10th anniversary... but probably not going to happen... it would mean at least 120 projects every month
