A great free recording and editing program is Audacity; you can download it at http://audacity.sourceforge.net
However, if you aren't comfortable with installing plug-ins and you want to use Audacity to convert files to .mp3 format, you should get a friend to help. I had an easy enough time installing it, but I am quite a geek and my friend had a lot of trouble with it.

I think the majority of volunteers here use Audacity. It's what we recommend to everyone who isn't willing to pay for a sound editor :)

Really? Among my musician friends it seems virtually unknown. I've only met one other person who'd ever heard of it, though everyone to whom I've made the suggestion has loved it.

I don't think we would have been able to easily get volunteers without it. I don't know that there are very many free audio recorders out there.
