This is not eligible, I'm sorry: We've already picked this back in April 2014.

I'm sure you can come up with something else! :D
Cheers, Ava.

How about: Elizabeth and her German Garden by Elizabeth von Arnim. Failing that, there's The Enchanted April by the same author.

The staff has picked for April - thanks for your suggestions. Please have a look at this page for the current list. You can also check out our wiki page for a plain vanilla list that contains all the staff picks for this year.

The theme for next month will be

Movements

Seeing the #metoo movement, the American kids against guns, the push for Catalonian independence, Black Lives Matter, and many more, I thought we could have a month focusing on movements, revolutions, and other fights for freedom.

I am happy about all suggestions concerning revolutions/all sorts of rights movements/women's lib/sexual freedom/independence...

Especially welcome are suggestions of plays and poetry.

Thanks for your help! :D
Cheers, Ava.

Ava,
I'm not sure if this revolution is on too small a scale, but "The 12 pound look" in the fifth one-act play collection https://librivox.org/one-act-play-collection-005-by-various/ shows a lovely marital rebellion. (Don't use this as a summary, as it's a spoiler:) a rather dull, bullying husband encounters his previous wife, who escaped from him and is making a living as a typist. His current rather nervous and down-trodden wife encounters her and, in the last lines of the play, has started to think about escaping, herself.

If you use it, I'd summarise it something like: in this gentle comedy, a self-centred, bullying husband discovers a strong streak of rebellion in his wife.

Andy Minter's reading of "The Song of the Shirt":

http://ia801409.us.archive.org/28/items/long_poems_003_librivox/song_of_the_shirt_hood_ajm_64kb.mp3

Wikipedia: [Thomas Hood's "The Song of the Shirt"] was published anonymously in the Christmas edition of Punch in 1843 and quickly became a phenomenon, centering people’s attention not only on Mrs. Biddell's case, but on the conditions of workers in general. Though Hood was not politically radical, his work, like that of Charles Dickens, contributed to the general awareness of the condition of the working class which fed the popularity of trade unionism and the push for stricter labour laws.

Best,

Barbara
