I'd just like to thank whichever of you picked "The Gladstone Colony" for the monthly suggestions. I recorded it because my great grandfather had a physical copy of the book, which he passed down to my grandfather, and my dad now has it. I was born in Gladstone, and, strangely enough, knew more about the history of Rome, or London, or Samarkand than about where I'd been born. I know it's probably not of much interest to you, because it doesn't have high drama, but recording it meant a lot to me.

I'm the staff picky one

I like to choose things that are a bit more obscure that people won't have heard of, unless they have a specific interest. Seems I hit home with this one

It's often the case that we don't know much about the history of our immediate surroundings. Interestingly, visiting the local cemetary can help. At least in Europe, sometimes the tombs tell you a bit of the people and how they died.

There was a huge tomb in my little town's cemetary with around 15 names or so, not all related, but died on the same day. Turns out it was WWII, a bomb dropped onto our town, the people - family of a tavern plus their staff - were trapped in their bomb shelter and eventually asphyxiated. Very tragic. Unfortunately, the stupid local government decided to remove the tomb and even the stone, probably because nobody paid for it anymore. C'mon people, that's not about money, that's local history!

Yes, finding plays set in South America or by authors from there is difficult.

There is Oroonoko, a play about a slave rebellion in Surinam in the West Indies. That might qualify?
