Howsabout a play: "The Enterprise of the ''Mayflower''

https://librivox.org/the-enterprise-of-the-mayflower-by-amice-macdonell/

Amice MACDONELL ( - )
"Welcome to all! We show the story of how, nearly three hundred years ago, when this country was not so happy as it is now, some people driven by persecution out of England went on a long and dangerous voyage in a ship called the Mayflower, and made for themselves a home across the Atlantic Ocean." (From the Prologue)

Said trip ending with the first (American) Thanksgiving gathering.

Thanks, Todd

The staff has picked for December! Please have a look at this page for the current list. You can also check out our wiki page for a plain vanilla list that contains all the staff picks for this year plus the readers!

With 2020 over (soon), things can only go uphill. I hope.

A Fresh Start

So, for the beginning of 2021, I'd like to see suggestions about starting new things, improving things or yourself, making the world a better place, learning or discovering something new, getting over something bad (like 2020),... you get the idea.

Especially welcome are suggestions of plays and poetry.

As always: All languages welcome!
Cheers, Ava.

https://librivox.org/wappin-wharf-a-frightful-comedy-of-pirates-by-charles-s-brooks/
A Play. Pirates "have retired, as we say, from active practice and live in easy luxury on shore." But have they really changed?

https://librivox.org/the-rocket-by-arthur-wing-pinero/
A Play. "I'm going to settle down, hearthrug and slippers and all that sort of thing. A lot of us have made up our minds to marry and retire from public life..." First, of course, is the search for a suitable wife.

https://librivox.org/the-schoolmistress-by-arthur-wing-pinero/
A Play. The Schoolmistress has a secret and wants to make a fresh start in a new profession. But "think of the deception I am practising upon dear Vere! Think of the people who believe in the rigid austerity of Caroline Dyott, Principal of Volumnia College. Think of the precious confidence reposed in me by the parents and relations of twenty-seven innocent pupils."

https://librivox.org/the-gay-lord-quex-by-arthur-wing-pinero/
A Play. Lord Quex, after a life of philandering, has decided to reform and marry. But he is not believed, particularly by the guardian of his intended. The play shows the difficulties in shaking a discreditable past - and how it is different for a male Lord than for a woman.

https://librivox.org/crossings-a-fairy-play-by-walter-de-la-mare/
A Play. Under the terms of a will, the Wildersham children have to relocate from the family house in the city to "Crossings" in the country, and to spend the first fortnight alone fending for themselves in the house. The children encounter interesting country neighbors, including ghosts and fairies. Or are they dreaming?

Does it have to end well? Because this one sure doesn't. https://librivox.org/za-chlebem-by-henryk-sienkiewicz/ A story about father and daughter tricked into a transatlantic journey by an unscrupulous agent.

Thanks Todd, a great selection!

Well, Piotr, to start next year, I'd prefer something uplifting. I think we all need a bit of hope after this year.
So, how far downhill does your book go?

Happy New Year!

The staff has picked for January - thanks for your suggestions! Please have a look at this page for the current pickings. You can also check out our wiki page for a plain vanilla list that will contain all the staff picks for this year plus the readers once I get to making it!

We have produced a number of works by African (American) authors lately, so I guess it's time to once more celebrate

Black History Month

So, for the next, I'd like to see suggestions about black history, blm, people of African descent and their accomplishments, slavery and the abolitionist movement... and black authors of course. I would like to see non-US accounts and authors as well if we have any.

Especially welcome are suggestions of plays and poetry.

As always: All languages welcome!
Cheers, Ava.

Howsabout Orronok? We have both the original book by Behn and the Play by Southerne.

https://librivox.org/oroonoko-or-the-royal-slave-by-aphra-behn/
Aphra Behn was the first woman writer in England to make a living by her pen, and her novel Oroonoko was the first work published in English to express sympathy for African slaves. Perhaps based partly on Behn's own experiences living in Surinam, the novel tells the tragic story of a noble slave, Oroonoko, and his love Imoinda.

https://librivox.org/oroonoko-by-thomas-southerne/
Based on Aphra Behn's 1688 novel (which is one of the earliest novels in the English language), Thomas Southerne's Oroonoko is seen by scholars today as the driving force that kept Behn's work from fading into obscurity. During the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, it was considered even more popular than the novel, presenting theatergoing audiences with a highly touching tale of pathos and tragedy involving the eponymous prince-turned-slave and his undying devotion to his beloved wife, Imoinda

Thank you!

Unfortunately, the play was already chosen last year in February, so we'll need something else here...

Well, whatabout Baboo Jabberjee? The Gutenberg etext illustration shows him to be black. Not the heroic character portrayal of Oroonoko....

https://librivox.org/baboo-jabberjee-ba-by-f-anstey/

Another delightful example of an English writer poking fun at his countrymen, or maybe all races' reactions to someone from a different background. A series of adventures of a well educated foreigner in London which originally appeared weekly in Punch, sometimes with illustrations, dealing with the difficulties of fully understanding a different culture.

Thanks, Todd

Among recent releases, there is the novel of "The Homesteader" by Oscar Micheaux, who is primarily known as an independent African-American silent movie producer/director. He also made a movie of this novel in 1919, but the movie has been lost.

In more modern material, there was this fairly recent recording of the "Kerner Commission Report", published in 1967. Its most famous quote is: " Our nation is moving toward two societies, one black, one white--separate and unequal."

In the area of poetry, Paul Lawrence Dunbar''s "Oak and Ivy" was recently added to the LV catalog. It was his earliest published poetry collection, and contains several of his well-known poems.

A project I took part in several years ago, "The Exiles of Florida", tells the often-overlooked story of how people escaping from slavery in Georgia found welcome among the Seminole of Florida, and how the US government spent years trying to recapture them and return them to slavery, while in the process making war on their Seminole allies. It's African American history and Native American history entangled together.

Ooooh we have a recent addition to the catalog perfect for that in Portuguese: https://librivox.org/o-abolicionismo-by-joaquim-nabuco/ The author was a very strong voice for abolitionism in Brazil: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joaquim_Nabuco

I don't know if this one has been spotlighted before, it is poetry, in Portuguese: https://librivox.org/os-escravos-by-antonio-frederico-de-castro-alves/
