2.5 hours for poetry is indeed impressive!

Ah, the Kalevala - wasn't that the one with break-ins and cow stealing? :hmm:
Cheers, Ava.

a lot of action going on, there might have been cow stealing, but I can't remember that incident. But I didn't read it all, only my sections ;)

Kitty wrote: December 3rd, 2018, 12:44 am interesting topic. I found a few here off the top of my head:

definitely the Odyssee. We have it in many languages, but maybe worth pointing out is the original Greek version. So far we have 8 books completed, but I’m not sure if that is the total:
https://librivox.org/book-1-of-the-odyssey-by-homer/
11 in the catalogue, working on the 12th now, 24 in total, as many as the letters in the Greek alphabet. :D I will make a group of these at some point... (lazy  )

The Iliad is even longer (still 24 books, but longer). Here is the Buckley translation https://librivox.org/the-iliad-of-homer-by-homer/

The theme for next month will be a bit more uplifting:

EPICS

I am happy about all suggestions regarding the longest books on LibriVox. The longer the better, give our listeners something to do over the long winter nights! I'm thinking of Count of Monte Christo, Les Mis, War and Peace, The Song of the Nibelungs, that kind of things. What else do we have And what is our longest LV recording ever?

Especially welcome are suggestions of plays and (epic) poetry.

Thanks for your help! :D
How about the Portuguese national epic, all in beautiful decassylables? Six and a half hours of them in Portuguese (https://librivox.org/os-lusiadas-by-luis-vaz-de-camoes/) or nine and a half in English (https://librivox.org/the-lusiads-by-luis-vaz-de-camoes/)!

I was going to suggest the icelandic sagas but while looking them up the forsythe saga also came up in the search results
Book one is here http://librivox.org/man-of-property-by-john-galsworthy/

I listened to those a couple years ago, content and reading is excellent

I just looked up the longest solo I have read - and it's a baby with a mere 19 hours...
Cheers, Ava.

How about the longest poem in the English language?

The Faerie Queene by Edmund Spenser
https://librivox.org/the-faerie-queene-by-edmund-spenser/

This version is just shy of 32 hours.

This is deducted from ekzemplaros list (which wasn't updated since 10/2016) http://ekzemplaro.org/librivox/catalog/ :

https://librivox.org/the-book-of-household-management-by-isabella-beeton/ 58:15:20 group
https://librivox.org/old-testament-world-english-bible/ 58:02:02 group
https://librivox.org/the-life-of-jesus-critically-examined-by-david-friedrich-strauss/ 57:51:17 looks like a solo to me
https://librivox.org/david-copperfield-nl-by-charles-dickens/ 56:51:13 solo
https://librivox.org/the-count-of-monte-cristo-version-3-by-alexandre-dumas/ 54:16:11 solo
https://librivox.org/de-kermis-der-ijdelheid-door-william-makepeace-thackeray/ 52:59:03 solo
https://librivox.org/aus-meinem-leben-dichtung-und-wahrheit-von-johann-wolfgang-von-goethe/ 51:52:16 solo

Also, the story of Thousand Nights and a Night came to my mind,
neither english nor german version is finished, english one (group):
https://librivox.org/group/436
stands at currently 8/16 volumes with 117 hours,
german one (solo):
https://librivox.org/search?q=tausend%20und%20eine%20nacht&search_form=advanced
stands at 3/4 volumes with 73 hours

Cheers

Wow, 58 hours as a solo! We have quite some dedicated readers!

And the 1001 nights will probably be just as long. We also have it in Spanish, btw, but nowhere near completion either.

Thanks for the NF suggestions! I knew about the "Book of Household Management", must check if this was already picked. Gray's Anatomy ( in 5 parts) also has more than 63 hours in total.
Cheers, Ava.

Hi

I would like just to mention here the Historia by Herodotus in Spanish. I think you Availle aready spotted it, so my post is not really necessary. The ninth and last book has just been completed by Tux very recently. The nine books make about 36 hours reading. The first book was completed in 2011.

Cheers!

Yes, I saw that over in the covers thread, but thank you for posting this here as well so that I can keep things together!

I would LOVE hearing of other non-English epics that we recorded, so if anybody knows of endless books in language x, let me know! (Do we have "War and Peace" in Russian? )
Cheers, Ava.
