A friend rang me yesterday to say she had enjoyed looking at my photographs from a recent trip to South Africa. When I asked how she had got the web address she said she had just looked up 'martin clifton' on Google. she was a a little vague and I was doubtful (patronizing I know, she does have a postgraduate degree in computer science after all...) and so I repeated the search -

Incredibly, not only does my audio page come first in the search, but my bits for Librivox come second an third!

Wow - fame at last

Is this a tribute to the power of Librivox or the rewards of virtue?

Since virtue is its own reward, it must be a tribute to the power of LibriVox! ;)

Congratulations on your newfound fame, Martin!

I did the same for myself, and the fourth search result was a link to an Aesop's Fable thread that I recorded for. Cool! Although, the first result is my webpage...that's cool too!

If you do a search for Chris Vee, the first result is mine, but who is that second listing? I haven't figured out how my last name can be chinese, italian, and hispanic?

Oh well. It's a bit easier to get fame when you're linked to a major university :)

My LibriVox stuff is pretty high up too.

1st is my website - it took me awhile, but I finally beat Alvin Dark out for the top spot....

Lol... there aren't a lot of Kara Shallenbergs in the world so I always come up on the first page :) My husband's name is more common. He was SO happy the day he beat the "other" Dan Parsons out of the top spot on google! (he's still there -- the top spot is his defunct blog but the bottom of the first page is his current one)

Trivia: this activity is called "ego surfing" :)

I've been on the net since the very beginning, so my own ego searches turn up sites which haven't been active for years. There's an amusing one out there which shows me and the ex all dressed up for an office Christmas party. The little guy peeking out from between us is now getting ready to celebrate his third wedding anniversary... ;)

All of this leads to an important lesson: be careful of what you put on the net because once it's out there it never really goes away - ever.

My website comes up #2 on Google if I search for just "Kristen" #1 is a porn site call the Kristen Archives; I'm not sure I want to take them on for the top spot.

Grumble, grumble. When I search for Kristin, it gives me three results. Then right below that it says "See the results for Kristen." You evil Kristens :p

We are evel. Your kind are evil.

How come when I was growing up, everyone tried to spell my name Kristin-with-an-i? Now they mostly get it right. I suspect the Kristen-with-an-e spelling must have become a popular baby name sometime well after I was born.

Sure enough, it was in the top 50 in the early 80s. But so was Kristin.
