Yes you do. Good for you Algy. My military disability check has not come in yet so I am waiting a bit to sign up.

I notice for the 2022 monthly chats, you will be using GoogleMeet instead of Zoom. This is another platform participants will be required to learn if they wish to participate. I presume there is a good reason for this switch. May I ask what it is?

I like it more than zoom, that's all. The platform is easier and more user friendly in my opinion. What do you think? I've run several test meetings and works well. If it turns out not to be better we can easily use zoom because what people will see and use is the link for either platform.

I haven't actually tried Google Meet but here are a few things I've found out about it so far.
1 It seems to have full functionality only on the Chrome browser. For others, like Firefox which I use, you have to fool around with extensions.
2 Screen sharing seems to be a bit of a pain even if you are using the Chrome browser. i.e. you can't see the other participants unless you use some trickery or have multiple displays.
3 There is no standalone application for the PC, it has to work through the browser. This could just be me since I don't like using browser based apps.

If I'm wrong on any of these please let me know. Like I said, I haven't really used it.

I've noticed some of the same quirks. One is that you can't share audio unless you've shared a Chrome tab as the source of the audio.

What!? If that is true then we should stick with zoom. What do y'all think?

My technological brain is stretched to the limit these days, yet I have to learn new stuff constantly just to barely get done all I want to do. 3 days ago my 365 Office crashed, then my Photoshop crashed, and I've had to dig around for 3 days trying to fix it. Uninstall. Shut down. Restart. Shut down. Restart. Install.
Then my phone updated. They all changed all my settings. Then CCleaner said I needed to upload their newest version and do I want to upgrade. NO, I don't want to learn another darn thing that I don't have a real good reason to learn. Besides which, it takes loads of repetition and practice for me to get good at things. I vote for sticking with what we already know and have paid for and which half the world uses already.

Now that's just my opinion. You know I'll be like
Stretch Armstrong for you if that's what you really want.

HA! I have been struggling to learn youtube stuff for 4 days (beat your 3) and I still can't understand why videos I upload go to strange places. My brain is feeling a bit over stuffed too. It does seem that old reliable things keep changing just to make me grit my teeth. So, y'all, we will stick with Zoom.

Thanks for suggesting this question! I added it to my list, and you can ask it during the meeting if you'd like.

I welcome any additional questions that anyone has...

I want to remind everyone that this is coming up soon.

Please let me know if you want me to add any questions for you.

-how to get the best results out of a microphone,
-general differences between USB and XLR mics,
-how the interface affects mic performance,
-when a condenser mic is/isn't the best choice for a home studio,
=how to take care of a microphone to protect it from premature aging,
-why washing your mic with soap and water is not a good idea.

December 10, 2021 there will be a zoom session for libriVoxers that will feature an expert on microphones explaining some of the basic things listed above. We all use a mic and should know more about the two main types and how they can help or not help our recordings. You DO know the two main types, right? The guest will be Ryan White Product Specialist with RØDE Microphones. He will just explain basic things and answer questions about microphones in general. So please join us, bring your microphone questions and problems and learn good stuff.
The session will be recorded of course. This is intended as an overview, not an in depth comparison of mics.

The link will be same as always, Phil's super secret private LibriVox meeting room deep inside the bat cave:

I want to thank Grace Buchanan for suggesting this and doing the background work setting it up and Michele Fry who has volunteered to host the meeting.
Ignatius, the Penguin of Happiness Image will be there to pass around the margaritas and complimentary fish.

Unfortunately my internet cut out for most of the meeting, but I'm excited to watch the replay on youtube!

So glad I was able to join in for a bit and hear Ryan dispense a ton of knowledge about audio and RØDE products.

Thanks to you all for organizing this and I'm looking forward to future ZOOM Librivox meetups. :)

It was a good meeting. Ryan White, with RODE microphones, was very knowledgeable about
- Condenser vs. dynamic microphones
- USB mikes that plug directly into your computer vs. those with a preamp interface
- side address (cartoid) mikes vs. end address mikes
- pre vs post audio corrections
- how/where to shop for mikes online
and a good many other things.

The session lasted 1 hour and 45 minutes, was recorded, and will be posted on LV's YouTube forum when it is ready.
