Hi :)

Just a note that we have slightly-differing instructions regarding the length of the end silence on recordings.

Some places, like PL instructions, now say "around (or about, or ~) 5 seconds," and the newer Group/Solo project templates say, "Leave 5 seconds."

The 1-Minute Test instructions (which is where a lot of newbies learn the specifics of recording) say 3-5 seconds.

If it's not that big a deal, no worries, but if it is quite important, maybe the 1-Minute Test page could be edited?

5 seconds is the standard for all recordings other than the 1 min test. "About or ~" is so we don't get people rejecting sections with 4.9 sec or 5.1 sec - which I'm sure you will agree doesn't need fixing.

The 1-minute test instructions are so there is some "room silence" at the end to use for noise removal as needed. The 0.5 sec at the beginning and 5 sec at the end for all other recordings is so that none of the actual recording gets cut off during playback.

Yes, it's true that it doesn't really matter that 1-minute tests have to have 5 seconds of silence at the end, and that all we really want is room tone. But I also agree and see where you're coming from when you say that the test is where most people learn what will become their habits of how to record. I don't see a problem in changing the wording on the 1-min test wiki page, personally. It's never too early to start building a good habit.

The 1-minute test is about the technical bits and includes only that needed for the test itself. There is no point in cluttering it up with others things, it is difficult enough for newbies anyhow. And we want people to get into live recordings as soon as possible.

Every project has a first post, which people need to look at if they are recording for it . These are not necessarily the same for all projects so maybe that is the habit we should stress rather than making people conform to something that is not necessary.

Although, it wouldn't be cluttering those instructions up with anything new - just changing "3-5 seconds" to "5 seconds" for LV consistency and introductory clarity.

Why teach an incorrect standard right up front?
