I found the following book on Gutenberg https://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/66577 They say it can be used and is in the PD. But the book also says Copyright Clayton Knight 1956 I was planning on doing a Solo of it. Any advice?

Copyright Status - Public domain in the USA.
It's okay. The copyright wasn't renewed 28 years after publication, so it has fallen into the PD.
School fiction: David Blaize
America Exploration: The First Four Voyages of Amerigo Vespucci
Serial novel: The Wandering Jew

Sometimes, Gutenberg just duplicates the original book, copyright notice and all. What is important is what you can see in the "bibliographic record" on the book's main page. And there it says for this one "Public domain in the USA" :D
