copywrite renewal

Hi there,

For public domain status, do we go by the original copywrite or by the renewal date? There's a text I'd like to read that was copywrited in 1926 but renewed by Simon and Schuster in 1954.

1925 is the latest date that copyright no longer applies at the moment so the renewal is irelevant at the moment.

But to answer the general question, we go by the original publication date. If it was more than 95 years ago, it's OK to record.

This one will be OK on January 1, 2022.

However - you may not necessarily read from the later published edition. They may be claiming copyright because they have "improved" it - general questions are difficult - lawyers are fond of Never the less.. and Not withstanding.. bits.

I'm asking about the 1926 copyright because I noticed a Thornton W Burgess recording of the Christmas reindeer has been done and from what I found the copyright date is 1926. I'm just curious how it all works, what we can use so far and what we can't. Thanks!

That was recorded from a PG text marked public domain in the U.S. It probably didn't have it's copyright renewed. Rule of Thumb: If it goes through the PG copyright clearance process, and they mark it PD in the US, then it can be recorded for LV.
