Hi there!
I'm Heather, and I once put my hand through a window trying to swat a fly.
No need to call PETA. The fly survived.

I recently joined and am having so much fun submitting short works and contributing to group projects! I know I just joined, but I'm interested in doing a short, solo reading from one of Johnny Gruelle's Raggedy Ann/Andy books. I noticed Project Gutenberg has his collected short works, but his books aren't available. They were all published in the 1930s, so the books should be public domain, too.

My question is about reading public domain works - does it mean that it has to be available on the internet in etext or just available at all? The books I'm thinking about are available in libraries and for purchase, due them being somewhat obscure, as opposed to the short stories. What I would read would be straight from the book since I haven't been able to find them as ebooks. Are we allowed to do that?

Thanks!!
Heather

Hi Heather

With some exceptions, books enter the public domain in the US after 95 years, so books first published in the 30's are likely still under copyright. Since Project Gutenberg screens books for PD before listing them, PG is relied on at LV as a confirmed source for PD material. There are other sources, including physical books (if they are the original from 1925 or earlier), but for your first solo effort, keep it simple and choose something from PG.

If you want to read from a hard copy that is PD, we'll ask you to upload an image of the title page, so we can verify that it was published before 1926.

Ok - it was published in 1931 and says the copyright was renewed in 1959, so I guess that answers that! LOL
