Question re "no music" rule

I would like to record an 1814 novella called The Spanish Guitar, and as I'm a classical guitarist I was thinking I'd record some short extracts of music written at the time to include in the audiobook. Is the "no music and sound effects" rule absolute, or can their be special exemptions of some kind? All the music would be approx. 200 years old, and I would be able to link to the public domain music scores so there would be no doubt about copyright.
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks, Steven.
