In addition to the above, here is a wiki article that may help

or the additional videos linked on this page

(This is really getting frustrating.) Okay, so Audacity isn't recording anything I'm saying at all. Is there a reason for this?

How do you do this? I imagined it would have something to do with the top bar of my computer, but I'm lost.
It would help to know what computer, OS and mic you are using. I assume it's a Mac since you used Quicktime, but without more information I'd only be shooting in the dark.

It's a MacBook Pro. The OS is Catalina. And I don't have a physical microphone, I simply use the aforementioned QuickTime to record directly with the computer.
Okay then, open System Preferences, open Sound, select Input at the top of the window and make sure Internal Microphone is selected.
Launch Audacity, open Audacity Preferences and make sure Host: Core Audio, Playback Device is Built-in Output, and Recording Device is Built-in Microphone. Under Tracks select Add New Mono Track. The microphone slider in the Audacity window should be about 3/4 of the way to the right. Now when you click the record icon or press the R key on your keyboard you should be recording.

Some issues:
Instead of Internal Microphone, the only option available was MacBook Pro Microphone. The Playback Device was MacBook Pro Speakers and the recording device was MacBook Pro Microphone. There was no option to select New Mono Track.

At the top of the Audacity window you will see Tracks. Select that and you will see Add New (it's the top choice). Select Mono Track. Everything else sounds like it is already correct.
Good luck.
Good luck.

I've done it, but it's still not picking up a single sound.
Sorry, but I don’t know what else to tell you.

Sorry if this is obvious or previously mentioned, but did you click the record button in Audacity?

Yes, but it didn't pick up any sound. The line on the screen didn't fluctuate, and no sound occurred from the playback.
