I saw this on gutenberg.org, and wonder if it is ok to read please.

If go there to the "Bibrec" tab it says (pretty far down):
Copyright Status Public domain in the USA.

That's good enough for us.
If you don't live in the US, you will have to adhere to the copyright of your own country, which is usually a term of (year of death) + x years.

In this case, we get (also from the Bibrec)
Adams, H. C. (Henry Cadwallader), 1817-1899

which is okay pretty much everywhere except for Mexico I think (where copyright is 120 years if I remember correctly).
