Hey everybody! I just got an Apogee 96K, an USB Pro mic, and can't set it up with windows 10. I need help. Please, anyone here can give me some hope?

First off, you may get better attention in the Need Help? forum. Maybe an admin will move it once you agree to look for it there...

Can you be a bit more specific, what seems to be the problem? What do you mean by "can't set it up"? What happens when you plug it in? Does the system acknowledge its existence? If you right-click on the speaker icon in the system area, and choose "Recording devices", is your mic in the list?

ETA: some hubs cannot properly support some devices, try plugging it into one of the computer USB ports, directly so to speak.

Hello Tovarisch! Thanks for your reply. In fact, I'm sure it's not something simple, and it has to do with Microsoft Windows 10 system. Dozens of people have been discussing and giving out about that issue on YouTube tutorials and on websites related to that specific mic when they try to record using this computer PC system. It seems it only works properly when connected to IPad, Mac and IPhone. I don't have any of those devices. There are tricks, though, some people try in order to make it work with windows 10, but it's painful. I'm downloading sixteen things right now following someone advices'. Let's see if it will work and I'll be back to tell you. BtTW, answering your question about the computer recognizing it, yes, it does! But it does not reproduces the sound. There's something work with the audio out. Thanks again! I'll keep on trying here. Thank you Sonia as well!🙏

Well, it seems you have plenty of information and some stuff to do...

I just googled for "Apogee MiC 96k windows 10" and came across this file: http://www.apogeedigital.com/pdf/ApogeeMiC96kWIN-MACUsersGuide.pdf . It explains the process of setting it up for Windows.

I'd love to verify it for you, but alas, I don't have the device handy. :(

Best of luck to you!

Hi,
Presumably you're aware that there are 2 versions of this mic: one for Mac & Windows, and one for iPad, iPhone and Mac. There was also the original MiC (not the 96k one) which iirc only worked on Mac and iOS.

Are you sure you know which version you're working with?

Guys, thank you very much! I have The second version of The mic, not The original one, which means it was supposed to work with Windows. Bit the history is: it doesn't! I have been struggling since last Wednesday with my husband and a computer specialist. No success ap to now, unfortunately.y energy is going down the drain after all these days. I pays a small fortune on it, bought it second hand11, and feel I'm in trouble. Anyways, thank you guys for your kind support. Maybe I'll need an IPad. Sad...

My point was that only some of the second version work with Windows. You need to verify which type of the second version you have...

ETA: If it came with an iOS Lightning cable then it's very likely to be the version for iPad, iPhone and Mac. So it's not intended to work with Windows...

The MiC 96k should work with Win 10. Check the support page for Apogee: http://www.apogeedigital.com/support/mic-96k

The Mic 96k was originally released in 2014 for Mac and iPad. Apogee released another version in 2016 for Windows and Mac. The later version seems to be compatible with iOS as long as you buy a Lightning cable (sold separately) - this page seems to make all that clear.

But that doesn't mean that the earlier 2014 version of the MiC 96k (for Mac and iPad) is compatible with Windows 10.

This page on the ProTools site states that the 2014 version is 'Not compatible with Windows 10'. And this discussion on the tenforums also states that the earlier version isn't compatible with Windows 10, though it doesn't quote any sources.

So it may still depend on which version of the mic you have. There seems to be no definitive statement about this on the Apogee site.

In addition to that confusion, I'm not sure that Apogee created a proper native driver for the Windows version - it seems to rely at least partly on an ASIO4ALL driver. That factor may be contributing to your pain. If you're not familiar with ASIO it's a proprietary technology developed by Steinberg (the people that gave us Cubase). ASIO4ALL is a non-profit project to make a free version available to everyone. It's great when it works, but the proprietary restrictions can make it hard to use for some applications. As an example, it can't be bundled with Audacity because of legal restrictions, but you can add it to Audacity yourself if you're prepared to compile your own version of the code...

Hello GrayHouse,

Thank you a million for your detailed explanation! I feel really sad after a long attempt of making that superb mic work. It didn't, unfortunately. I travelled to another city to buy it second hand from someone who bought it years ago in USA. JP Jacobsen, as the guy is known, used to connect it to his Mac. He was also surprised when realized all of the problems Apogge presents when it comes to Windows 10 installation (P.S: this mic isn't the original version. It wis the second version!). Conclusion: I posted the device through mail this very day, and Jacobsen is going to turn my money back. Well, I tried everything a human being could try, even called a computer technician to help me. There was no way out.
We definitely reached the limit of our capacities.
And, sadly, this is the end of Apogee story.
I'm search for a new mic, which may improve the quality of my recordings, a condenser one. Yes, I'll start it all again... We should never give up!

Thank you very very much!
Regards,

Sacciotto

I would like to thank everyone here that spent some time trying to help me.
Unfortunately, the mic didn't work at all, but at least that long novel had an end. It was really exhausting!

Thanks for telling us the ending, often with help threads I'm left wondering about the final resolution.

Not at all, Anne! I think that an answer like that may help others with the same problem I had.
