Hi there, I came across this thread while searching for scans of the 1923 translation of Demian. I was hoping to produce the book for Standard Ebooks and also post it to Gutenberg.

I see you started the process, but the final ebook isn't on Gutenberg. Did you manage to make any progress? If not, do you have the page scans or OCR text available, so I can take a crack at it?

I could not wrap my mind around the Gutenberg process. I scanned Damian in page by page with my Epson Perfection 4490 Photo Scanner, meticulously corrected the many OCR errors over several weeks (comparing each page to the actual book I had in my hand from the library), converted it to a Word doc, and sent it in. They approved the copyright page, but refused to accept the full document and seemed agitated that I bothered them with it. They kept pointing to their instructions, which I read over and over but could not master.

Alas, I did not save my scans as PDF's or I would have just uploaded them to IA. That is the only thing I will do in future.

I read my rendition of Demian from the actual first edition in my hand, which was much more difficult that reading from a computer screen.

I don't actually know how Gutenberg thrives with the way it greets and supports potential enthusiastic volunteers. I wish you the best of luck.

Did you keep the images of the scans, or the Word document you created? I don't need PDFs, the raw images will do just fine.

I've volunteered as a proofreader and formatter for Project Gutenberg Distributed Proofreaders for only a short time, but from what I've read and what I understand is that PG prefers submissions to go through PGDP for proofreading and formatting (see Volunteers' FAQ). Each page on PGDP goes through 3 proofreading rounds and 2 formatting rounds; each round is done by a different volunteer to hopefully catch issues the other person didn't. Even though you've proofread it and corrected many OCR errors already, I would consider submitting your scanned pages to PGDP.

Been there, done that. I got what I wanted done for LV, so I'll leave interfaces with PGDP to someone else. Will look for the files when I get time to send to acabal.

Hi msfry, did you happen to have those files lying around after all?
