Thanks,
Peter

.. and one Greek word, please:
The word chalcopyrite (which is a copper and iron ore) is derived from Greek "chalkos", (copper) and "pyrites".
Is chalkos pronounced with an initial "k" sound or a "ch" sound, as in "chalk"?
Thanks,
Peter

Thanks for the German pronunciation, Ava.
Thank you, Ruth; I've got a pronunciation for chalcopyrite, but I was wondering about that Greek "ch" ... if it was pronounced as a "k", I'd have expected the transcription to be "kalkos"

Was sent a Welsh course by a family member a few years ago. I think I still remember the rules of pronunciation. Actual Welsh speakers will correct me if I'm wrong.Peter Why wrote:Welsh pronunciation needed, please: probably both place names.
Cwmgynen
Llandeilo
(from Encyclopaedic Britannica article on coprolites).
Peter
Cwmgynen = Coom-gun-en (the oo of look, gun as in bang, and en as in end)
Lan-day-lo (that ll is sort of aspirated on the sides of the tongue)

Help please with some place names in Belgium, for our WWI history book!
Vlamertinghe (Vlamertinge)
Poperinghe
and the highly controversial "Ypres" (for which I've heard at least 3 different pronunciations already!)

I won't attempt the other two, but Ypres is EE-pruh - unless you are speaking as a British WWI tommy. They all pronounced it "wipers"!

Vlamertinghe and Poperinghe are Flemish, so pronunciation resembles Dutch, and Ypres in the Wallonic (or is it Walloon in English?), so more French pronunciation, like Ruth said.
