Thanks for all of the suggestions!
I suspected it had to do with the latest Microsoft update.
Turns out this is indeed the case, and the update has caused wide-spread problems, some more serious. My wife can't even log onto her Windows.
I found a short video on YouTube that walked me through a very simple process and with a few clicks I am back in business.
Other solutions suggested everything from editing the register to downloading their software. But, here's the link in case anyone else has the same issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQmRY4jxtoo

This is not a terrible problem, but is it possible to fix a small noise within a word or two, or is it simply better to rerecord it? I have a small sample mp3, but have no idea if I can insert it here. I am thinking not.

You can upload the sample to the test folder and post the link here. I'm curious to hear it as I often fix small noises as you describe in my files. I take it as a challenge and spend way too much time on it.

Nan,
If you decide to re-record those two words, try to actually record the whole phrase, from a pause to a pause, then you could try to copy-and-paste those two words into your track. There is a new feature in Audacity -- punch-in recording. Might be just what you need... Of course, matching the intonation and the room noise is not always possible, but with just two words it likely is not going to be too noticeable.

I like to not rerecord as much as possible, so I prefer using Noise Reduction and adjusting the sensitivity way up high over the tiny noise (mouthclick or other noise). Pretty soon it's gone. But I don't highlight the entire word(s), since when I adjust the sensitivity it can make my voice sound really tinny. So in answer to your question, yes, it's possible, but it often takes more hassle than just rerecording. (Of course, if you're really quick at editing, it might just be quicker to edit.)

Sometimes a click sound can magically be removed with the DeClicker effect (a separate add-on, if you didn't know that already). But most other noises within words are too hard to remove, in my experience.

Bev, have at it. When I look at the waves and can't distinguish the sound from the words, I pretty much give up. I was just wondering what others do.

De-Clicker doesn't touch this. If it were my audio, I'd have to re-record that portion.Nedge wrote: ↑October 19th, 2018, 1:09 pm https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/pretty_angry.mp3

I wasn't sure which part of it was noise...
Is this https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/pretty_angry_cleaned.mp3 any better?

What is wrong with this section? I understand it well and am not sure what you hear as wrong?Nedge wrote: ↑October 19th, 2018, 1:09 pm https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/pretty_angry.mp3

And I love to re-record a word or section; it fixes a problem quickly rather than wasting a lot of time fiddling with tiny bits of it, trying to find where the problem is, finding the right editing tool, z spots, etc, etc. If I'm not happy with a phrase, just hit record so it does it in another track directly underneath the bad part, say it again, copy it and stick it in. Easy, peasy.
It's just a random noise. a THUNK. An example of the kind of thing which happens to drive me insane once in a while. I rerecorded.
I learn something new every day. TWO things on Sundays. This week? Don't record with a head cold. (Although now I do know what a cough, and a loud sniff, look like in waves.)

Nan, here is a video I made showing how I search for and destroy a pop or click in my recordings. Basically I zoom in on the section with the problem and then slowly back out, pressing the C key to listen, until it is not there; then I know the click is right there. Not high tech but it works for little things.

The shortcut keys and AutoHot keys have saved me umpteen hours of editing.
Hi everybody,
I have a problem, I accidentally closed audacity without register my files and cannot find them when I open audacity again. I had at least 5 sections recorded there. If anyone can help me with that I would appreciate.
Thanks a lot!
