The current release of Audacity is 2.0.0. It replaces all previous versions. It is derived from version 1.3.14, but is no longer a Beta version, and has major improvements over 1.2.6.

Major feature changes in 2.0 over 1.2.6 are:

Many effects significantly improved, especially Equalization, Noise Removal and Normalize. Vocal Remover now included plus GVerb on Windows and Mac. VAMP analysis plug-ins now supported.
Improved label tracks with Sync-Lock Tracks feature in the Tracks Menu. Multiple clips per track. Tracks and selections can be fully manipulated using the keyboard. Many more keyboard shortcuts.
New Device Toolbar to manage inputs and outputs. Timer Record feature. New Mixer Board view with per-track VU meters.
Automatic Crash Recovery in the event of abnormal program termination.
Fast “On-Demand” import of WAV/AIFF files if read directly from source. FLAC now fully supported. Added support for optional FFmpeg library for import/export of AC3/M4A/WMA and import of audio from video files.

GOOD! I'm tired of telling people it's OK to download the beta version rather than the much-inferior, "stable" version.

Uh oh - this means updating the wiki. :?

I'm impressed, I installed 2.0 this evening in a new folder and it shows all the plugins installed for previous versions as well as exports MP3s without telling it where the lame was at :D

I just got my husband's hand-me-down computer and installed Audacity 2.0 today. I DID have to tell it where LAME was. LOL! (Of course - it hadn't been downloaded yet!)

Hooray. That was a long time in beta-- something like 7 years.

Problems and a fix.

Running XP Pro – Service Pack 2

I did not uninstall Audacity 1.3.14

Downloaded and installed Version 2.0.0 to a different directory, not the default directory.
C:\program files\audacity2, leaving version 1.3.14 untouched.

Tried to launch Audacity V2.0.0, received the following error.

Unable to execute file:
C:\Program Files\Audacity2\audacity.exe
CreateProcess failed; code 14001.

This application has failed to start because the application configuration is incorrect. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.

Uninstalled and reinstalled Version 2.0.0, 2 more times, still received the same error message.

I did not try and launch Version 1.3.14 after the error, so I can't say if it was damaged or not, my mistake.

Fixed, with help and information found on the net, here:

http://forum.audacityteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=63476

this thread references Audacity Version 1.3.14, but works for Version 2.0.0

and here

http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?displaylang=en&id=5582

Uninstall Audacity 1.3.14
Uninstall Audacity 2.0.0

Delete both Audacity directories from the Program Files folder.

Download and install Microsoft Visual C++ 2008 SP1 Redistributable Package (x86) using the Microsoft link above.

Reinstall Audacity Version 2.0.0

Launch Audacity V2.0.0 – Yay  it works. I did not have to reinstall Lame, Audacity found it with no help from me.

Hope this helps.

I hate computers................would someone tell me how to prevent audacity 2.0 from adding a NEW track every time?
Shift R is not what I need.

I'm about to explode.

Thank you kindly

Thank goodness. How exciting!

Enjoy Tom Swift? Perhaps you would enjoy a book about him meeting up with some Diamond Makers
Or perhaps you'd rather talk about music with children.

I'm not up on the keyboard short cuts, but <shift> and the Audacity Record button work for me to continue recording on the existing track.

Thanks anyway, I will use Adobe Audition instead.
More control and I can manage the dumb tracks.

As David says, Shift + Record button has always allowed you to continue to record on the same track (as long as your cursor is on that track) and still does.

Shift + R only records on the same track if you have it set to do so in Edit | Preferences | Keyboard. Likewise, Ctrl + R repeats your last effect.

However, if you are happier with Adobe Audition, that is just fine too.

Well, I cannot see any difference at all, neither good or bad

I even started doubting that I was running the right version, but I am, I removed the old one. :hmm:

Am very curious about adobe audition or actually soundbooth. It seems to offer quite a bit. Thoughts?

Perhaps you'd get a greater response if you started a new thread with those in the subject line. With this subject line as "Audacity", many users of Adobe Audition and Soundbooth probably won't read it.

Thank you Darvinia! I just spent last hour watching tons of audacity tutorials. Discovering envelope tool and trying to puzzle out the split delete conundrum as well as cross fading. I think I'm pretty much stuck with audacity.
