Ouch! but thanks. You've stowed his ashes commendably", was Tom's well-earned compliment.
I never knew I could do this! Where were you yesterday when I did all this manually?! Haha!philchenevert wrote: ↑January 10th, 2020, 5:42 pmNew video January 2020: Truncating Silences in Audacity https://youtu.be/Mzwdejut4gY
The sections shorter than the threshold you set are ignored so in this case any silence shorter than 0.5 would be ignored. Like all effects this can be included in a personalized script that can be run on tracks, saving time. i can explain more if you like. By the way, someone PMd me and asked for this video. i just assumed everyone knew about it and had never bothered before so you see, asking is great!KevinS wrote: ↑January 10th, 2020, 6:07 pmI never knew I could do this! By the way, if your threshold is .5 seconds and you 'truncate' to 1 second, do the shorter segments get lengthened to 1 second or are they left alone?
Ah, I understand. They are left alone if they are shorter than 1 second.
This is great! Thanks!philchenevert wrote: ↑January 10th, 2020, 7:44 pmAh, I understand. They are left alone if they are shorter than 1 second.
Here are two examples of how this can be used; it is a very versatile effect : (I took them from Audacity help)
Truncate Detected Silence examples:
Shorten all silences that are longer than 2 seconds to 2 seconds
This may be useful for shortening inter-track gaps from an LP or cassette recording.
Set the Operation mode in the dropdown to "Truncate Detected Silence".
Set the detection "Level:" control. If there is noticeable background noise you may need to set this as a higher (less negative) value than the default.
Set the detection "Duration:" control to 2 seconds. Silences of 2 seconds or more will be chosen by the effect for truncation.
Set the "Truncate to:" control to 2 seconds. All detected silences will be truncated to 2 seconds.
Click OK.
Shorten silences that are 20 seconds or longer to 5 seconds
This may be useful for removing long pauses in a speech recording, without affecting the natural rhythm of the speech.
Set the Operation mode in the dropdown to "Truncate Detected Silence".
Set the detection "Level:" control.
Set the detection "Duration:" control to 20 seconds. Silences of 20 seconds or more will be chosen by the effect for truncation.
Set the "Truncate to:" control to 5 seconds. Silences of 20 seconds or more will be truncated to 5 seconds. Silences of less than 20 seconds will remain unchanged.
Click OK.
I will probably only use it when I am recording narration for a dramatic reading and want the space between segments to be a uniform 3, 4, or 5 seconds.annise wrote: ↑January 10th, 2020, 7:53 pmI would have thought it would have limited use in LV - in normal speech there are times when you shorten or lengthen the pauses for effect, I'd hate that to be lost. Speaking personally I often wish readers would leave a slightly long pause in places like the last line of a poem when I'm contemplating the meaning and a voices saids end of poem.

I use this effect ALL THE TIME now. Many thanks!philchenevert wrote: ↑January 10th, 2020, 5:42 pmNew video January 2020: Truncating Silences in Audacity https://youtu.be/Mzwdejut4gY
