I know the play was written to be set in Lancashire but I don't think it's got a great deal of Lancashire written into it, indeed it's rather a universal situation. I should have thought it would translate quite well to an American setting - New York? It's interesting that the play was first produced in America and that in the PG version mentioned, although the introduction says "The_ SCENE _is Salford, Lancashire, and the period is 1880.", the stage directions say "The_ SCENE _represents the interior of_ HOBSON'S_Boot Shop in Chapel Street, Bedford." (my italics)
I take it that's not the UK Bedford
