Hi,
Anyone out there know how to pronounce “scorzonera”? It’s used in a Brothers Grimm tale (roots of scorzonera).
I’ve poked around and seen some different pronunciations…but not all seem to be very good sources.
Thanks,
Stephanie

Thanks! I’ve recorded all of them and I’ll see what sounds best.

Not sure whether this is the right place to report, but there's a link in the English Pronunciation Guide wiki (linked in the first post of this thread) that may need updating.
The link for the Voice of America Pronunciation Guide, http://ibb7.ibb.gov/pronunciations/index.cfm, appears to be dead - it times out.
Googling on "Voice of America Pronunciation Guide" brought me here: https://pronounce.voanews.com/ So maybe the site moved and the link in the wiki needs updating?
Happy to post this info elsewhere if there's a better place to report!

Nicole J. LeBoeuf. It rhymes with "I write stuff."

Could someone help me with the pronunciation of these French names, please?
"Albert, ouvrier" (Edit: does the "t" carry over to "ouvrier"?)
Lamartine
Fourier
St. Simon
Pierre Leroux
Louis Blanc
St. Antoine
Fauberg St. Antoine
Vincennes
Guépin
Thanks,
Peter

"I think, therefore I am, I think." Solomon Cohen, in Terry Pratchett's Dodger
no, the 't' does not carry over here, first because there's a comma, to separate the words and I don't think I would ever make a liaison with that name anyway.
If you still need the words, I can record them tomorrow morning if that's not too late and if nobody beats me to it.
Sonia
here they are all, in the beginning a bit slow so you catch the pronunciation well and at the end I spoke them fluently.
https://librivox.org/uploads/knotyouraveragejo/french_peter.mp3
hope this helps. If you wish me to check on your pronunciation you can send them to me via PM, as you wish.
BTW I suppose "fauberg" is a typo for "faubourg" and said the correct word.

I'll be needing some occasional help with Nietzsche, as he seems to like quoting French philosophers. I'm sure anyone that actually understands French will appreciate if I don't butcher that quite so bad.
For now, only this from Voltaire: "croyez-moi, mon ami, l'erreur aussi a son mérite."

Looking for a Greek speaker who can read the following and send me an .mp3 that I can cut and paste into my recording -
Λόγος τοῦ ἔργου ἄνευ ὕλης.—Aristotle's definition of art.
Ὅ χρή σε νοεῖν νόου ἄνθει.—Chaldaic Oracles.
Ἐγώ εἰμι πᾶν τὸ γεγονὸν, καὶ ὂν, καὶ ἐσόμενον, καὶ τὸν ἐμὸν πέπλον οὐδείς πω θνητὸς ἀπεκάλυψεν.—Inscription upon the temple at Sais.
Plotinus aimed at ἐπαφήν, and παρουσίαν ἐπιστήμης κρείττονα, and τὸ ἑαυτὸν κέντρον τῷ οἷον πάντων κέντρῳ συνάπτειν.
Μέλλει τὸ Θεῖον δ' ἐστὶ τοιοῦτον φύσει.—Euripides in Orestes.
I can stumble my way through a phrase here and there, but this is too much for me to handle. BTW, it is from Thoreau's journal.
If this is not the right place for this request, please let me know. TIA!

just saw this one, do you still need it ?redrun wrote: ↑November 12th, 2022, 2:24 pmI'll be needing some occasional help with Nietzsche, as he seems to like quoting French philosophers. I'm sure anyone that actually understands French will appreciate if I don't butcher that quite so bad.

Here is a slow version to practice and then the more fluent version after: https://librivox.org/uploads/triciag/french-nietzsche.mp3
It means: "Believe me, my friend, an error also has its merit."
if you want me to check your attempt, write me a PM

Would a Dutch speaker be able to read the following aloud for me to copy?
https://archive.org/details/princetontheolog1911arms/page/148/mode/1up
From Van den... to Drukkerij Universitas. Including the numbers in Dutch.
Also from Professor Visscher’s to R. K. v. d. Berg.

Could someone record the following for me:
J'aime la nuit,
La nuit des reves
Aux heures braves
Quand l'astre luit
Sur champs et greves,
J'aime la nuit.
Quand la nuit dort
Dans le silence,
La lune lance
Sa clartd d'or,
Qui se balance
Quand la nuit dort.
The result would then be pasted into the solo I record.

I have a bit of time so I can record it for you. I see it's a young girl reciting the poem, so the different voice will not even be strange here. I will post it in your project later on
