Inaudible [and various other challenges]
Specifics? Let's see. One is that oftentimes there isn't room to fit in the correction . I think; maybe if there's no room, it's because I've snipped out the "wrong" words, and now there's no room. I just need it spelled out literally step by step, hopefully with each button pushed highlighted or circled. There's something about putting the cursor in front of the offending words, then recording the new words. But somewhere in there I mute, something? the wrong words? Do I cut out the bad words at all, or just paste the new words over them, and how does that work?

Latest tutorial, from the Audacity makers themselves:
https://support.audacityteam.org/repairing-audio/re-recording-a-section#fixing-a-bad-section-afterwards
Looks like they recommend muting the bad section, selecting around it, and using Shift+R to record in a new track at that point in time.
Ah, and here's where that check-box comes in: if it's checked, then just hitting record (or pressing R) will record the way that Shift+R does normally.
I didn't experience it myself, but this reader's specifics seem to match what you were seeing.

OK, this is good information to know, thanks. Not having room to stick in a correction: try Preferences > Tracks > Track Behaviors >Editing a clip can move other clips. Should be chedked. That will let you paste in your new word.7A2c3Ml wrote: ↑September 30th, 2022, 8:32 am Specifics? Let's see. One is that oftentimes there isn't room to fit in the correction . About fixing words, Keep it simple is my mantra, no muting or anything like that involved, just copy and paste.
1) put cursor in front of the bad word/phrase
2) record a replacement word in a new track right underneath it. I need to hold Shift + Record for a new track to pop up automatically.
3) say the word right
4) copy this replacement word
5) delete the new track (important!) This eliminates the need to mute anything.
6) put my cursor right where it goes and paste that nice new sucker in.
I then listen using the 'c' key and if it sounds ok, then cut out the offending word or phrase. If I am happy, i take a sip of coffee or gumbo and keep on listening for the next boo-boo. If it still doesn't sound right, I just do it again. Note that you may need to experiment in how to open a new track underneath your current track, sometimes the default just Record, and sometimes the default is Shift + Record.
EDIT: Since I stop and start recording a track many times, my default is to start recording where I left off so the "r" key just picks up recording right at the end and does not make a new track .

To poke my (utterly unqualified) head in here, I run into the "not enough space" issue when I haven't joined the clips in my track--i.e., there are separate "boxes" with #1, #2, #3, etc., in the track. This happens when I push the stop button when recording. For some reason, Audacity can't just "push" the rest of the clips down the timeline.
Perhaps someone can tell me if the whole shift-record thing takes care of this, but...
I have to either join the clips (by clicking the cursor on the EXACT place they touch...the cursor turns to a white arrow on a PC in that exact spot) or I have to go drag all the clips further down the timeline so that there is empty space after the clip I'm trying to paste into.
Clear as mud?
Thanks,
Stephanie

Stephanie, we welcome your head here, so poke it in anytime! If you wish to pickup recording where you left off, that is a option in Audacity you can choose.stepheather wrote: ↑September 30th, 2022, 9:41 am To poke my (utterly unqualified) head in here, I run into the "not enough space" issue when I haven't joined the clips in my track--i.e., there are separate "boxes" with #1, #2, #3, etc., in the track. As I have said, I stop and start many times in any track and so I use the option to just pick up where I left off, without making a new track. EDIT > Preferences > Recording the box for 'Record on a new track' should not be ckedked. Nifty, eh?
About not enough space try that thing I mentioned in the post above, about Preferences and the "Allow clips to move" box being checked. Gee, this may be an excuse for yet another video!

This one was done in Oct 2020 https://youtu.be/dgNCkTRLaS8
I just made another one today and here is the link https://youtu.be/2Y5hYq78ohs This was done with 3.1.3 and included about the error message of not enough space for no extra cost!!!
EDIT: here is a link to most of the LV help videos https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Instructional_Videos
You need specifics? I agree with one that's already up, i.e. how do you squeeze new words in where there seems to be no space. Beyond that, though, I just do not know which thing to do when. I need it broken down very slowly, and very clearly. Graphics with bullet points would be helpful. Just spell, it, out, for, me.

I know the feeling Mark. Watch this and tell me if I need to break it down more https://youtu.be/2Y5hYq78ohs7A2c3Ml wrote: ↑September 30th, 2022, 2:04 pm You need specifics? So you don't get the 'no space' message any more? If you DO, I cover that in the above video. What fun.... I love making videos; it lets me avoid rreal work.
