I believe LibriVox is conservative in what it considers PD (published in the US before 1927) since it takes a lot more resources to do the research in other cases.

The only way we'd accept it is if it were copyright-cleared by Project Gutenberg. Like you say, it requires a lot of effort to do that.

Just a hint - the Indian Digital library uploads information applies to India, not anywhere else. Which is fine.
But does not give us the right to distribute them from a USA based platform,
Annoying I agree and the USA laws are weird but that is what they are and there are heaps of PD in the USA texts available still
