Covermakers Chat Thread
I had to reset some things on my laptop and now the username/password to get into the cover claims board doesn't fill in automatically! And I can't remember it, and couldn't find it in the first post. Where do we get that from?

to be able to choose a fitting font more easily, i made an image in which i wrote each font's name in that font - you can see like 50 at a glance, what they look like and what they are called. i find it very useful myself so if anyone is interested im glad to share. i have gimp/windows standard fonts and one separate image with the ones i added manually (4 pngs in total).

If you have Word Pad (comes with Windows 7, 8, 10) , it displays all the font names in their font. In addition, I tab over about 5 times, type in the text to the right of the page, highlight it, then as I scroll down the fonts on the drop-down list (which hangs down the left margin and blocks any text there), it changes the title to that font. Very handy.Carolin wrote:to be able to choose a fitting font more easily, i made an image in which i wrote each font's name in that font - you can see like 50 at a glance, what they look like and what they are called. i find it very useful myself so if anyone is interested im glad to share. i have gimp/windows standard fonts and one separate image with the ones i added manually (4 pngs in total).
Why Microsoft doesn't add that feature to Word, I can't figure. I have an older version of Photoshop which doesn't have that feature either. Maybe the newer versions do.

Just checked on Word 2016 and it has this feature. Not sure about previous Word versions.
Cheers

I would imagine the cousin of Libreoffice, Openoffice, would also have it.
In general I would imagine that most text editors have this possibility.
Using Word, or Libreoffice,etc... for displaying fonts shows the system fonts (the fonts usable for all software installed). Gimp has also the possibility of having fonts installed only for itself.
As regards Gimp again, just glancing at the manual now, I see there is a way to show a standard phrase in the selected font when in the font dialog within the text tool:
https://docs.gimp.org/en/gimp-font-dialog.html
and also as a tool option:
http://ahmed.amayem.com/gimp-preview-fonts-3-ways-open-fonts-dialog-md/#ipt_kb_toc_1805_10
I have also made like Carolin images with sets of fonts I like, with their names, just to remember. However I have a tendency to consider hundreds of fonts and frequently finish using newer ones.
This way has the advantage of being independent of the software used.
Cheers!

Sticking this here, because I don't know where else to stick it, Regarding http://librivox.org/the-conspiracy-of-pontiac-and-the-indian-war-after-the-conquest-of-canada-by-francis-parkman-jr/:
The soloist wrote:Here are some suggestions for possible illustrations for the cover-

Hey, everyone. I'm working on a short little solo that has some really lovely illustrations included on Gutenberg, and I'd love to see one of them become the cover for it, but I really don't think I'm ready to try my hand at it myself. Here is the solo thread: viewtopic.php?f=28&t=66460 and the Gutenberg link: http://www.gutenberg.org/ebooks/55089
I especially like the title page image, and it's basically ready-made for you with the title and author and all. Would anyone want to take this on?
And I'm sorry if I'm posting in the wrong place, but I figured you could at least point me in the right direction?

Someone probably will use it, most of us check out the illustrations and cover before making one, but let me say - few rectangular images are easy to turn into a square, and making the text readable as a cd cover and a thumb image is also a challenge that it's often difficult to meet. But sometimes it does work well.
So covers are like everything else at LV , you either do it yourself or accept what others do

Thanks for the input. Yeah, it definitely wouldn't look good to just squish the whole thing down into a square. But maybe to cut off the bottom portion of it?? Anyway, I guess I just wanted to suggest it and see. Maybe one day I will try my hand at a cover myself, but I'm just not ready to take on that learning curve yet, I don't think.annise wrote:Someone probably will use it, most of us check out the illustrations and cover before making one, but let me say - few rectangular images are easy to turn into a square, and making the text readable as a cd cover and a thumb image is also a challenge that it's often difficult to meet. That one was easy - and I suppose that is what she was meaning , I assumed it was the cover image , which has an oval wreath of assorted flowers and a library label stuck over it which obliterates some of the flowers. And is grubby
The frontspiece was quite attractive too.
