Project: Link Wikipedia pages to LibriVox recordings.

Welcome all LibriVoxers :)

Out of the almost 10,000 recordings LibriVox offers only 49 have links from Wikipedia as of the date of this post. Let's change this by increasing the number of Wikipedia "Book" pages that have links to LibriVox recordings by way of this project.

This linkage from wikipedia to LibriVox has been discussed on earlier LibriVox threads and is now at the point of a viable project. Prior threads on this subject: viewtopic.php?f=22&t=1736, and viewtopic.php?f=24&t=55376

Wikipedia has approved a project to include links to LibriVox recordings on the associated Wikipedia "book" page. For instance, Wikipedia has an entry for The Time Machine by H. G. Wells. This The Time Machine book page may now have a link to the LibriVox recordings of this text. In fact, LibriVoxers have permission from wikipedia to link every book possible.

There is only one "approved" way to link to LibriVox recordings from Wikipedia. Per wikipedia's standard formatting, there is usually a section toward the end of the article named "External Links." Links to external (non-wikipedia) pages containing the text read for LibriVox recordings, like Gutenberg or Internet Archives will be found there. Links to LibriVox recordings can now be placed there. The link must be through the use of a Wikipedia template which was custom designed and implemented for this effort to add LibriVox links to Wikipedia pages. Green Cardamom, an editor at Wikipedia, did a great job in creating a simple template as you can see from the following description of how to use it.

It's simple, merely replace BOOK with the name of the book as it's listed at LibriVox, and replace AUTHOR with the name of the author listed at LibriVox. That's it. (The asterisk is required)

* {{librivox book | title=BOOK | author=AUTHOR}}
becomes
* {{librivox book | title=The Time Machine | author=H. G. Wells}}

This will add the link as seen at the bottom of this Wikipedia page:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Time_Machine

which will look like this:

(icon of a speaker) The Time Machine public domain audiobook at LibriVox

If there is no External links section, add the section at the bottom with the LibriVox link following, like this:

==External links==
* {{librivox book | title=The Time Machine | author=H. G. Wells}}

Warning: There is a lot of stuff at the bottom of a Wikipedia that must come after the external links, so don’t add this at the very last line. Read the code for the page and you will see other sections marked by the two equal signs, "==". The external link section must be the last of these types of sections.

After the link has been created and tested in Wikipedia please post in this thread. Posting in this thread will let LibriVox user ekzemplaro know. Ekzemplaro is the keeper of the un-official list of LibriVox recordings that has been updated to indicate whether there is a link from the associated Wikipedia page or not: (http://ekzemplaro.org/librivox/catalog/.

Also, LibriVox has a place on the audio book page for a link to wikipedia if a wikipedia book page exists. Once you have verified the link from wikipedia to LibriVox , please also confirm there is a link on the LibriVox page back to that same wikipedia page. If there is no link on the LibriVox page, that is because when the project was completed there wasn't yet a wikipedia page for the book. In other words, verify that both links, back and forth between wikipedia and LibriVox, exist and work. If there is no link from LibriVox to wikipedia, please post that information in this thread also.
  • -1 --> Not checked yet
    0 ---> Checked. No link to or from Wikipedia
    1 ---> Checked. The link from LibriVox to Wikipedia exists
    2 ---> Checked. The link from Wikipedia to LibriVox exists
    3 ---> Checked. Links exist both to and from wikipedia and Librivox
Please use one of these statuses when reporting to ekzemplaro:

You should check ekzemplaro's unofficial file before you chose which audio recordings to link to in order to avoid duplicate effort.

If you like the idea of linking up with Wikipedia, please join us and help out by picking a book and getting it's link onto a Wikipedia page.

Note: Wikipedia is pretty easy to use and modify. They have lessons available and helpful denizens. You can also message me if you need anything related to this project.

My main contact at Wikipedia was with an editor named Green Cardamom: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Green_Cardamom.

I'm sorry ekzemplaro, I know just about nothing about links from LibriVox to wikipedia. I'm guessing this is just what it sounds like but I have never seen one, etc. Because of this I don't know what status "2" means.

Also, does this mean there will be nowhere in your catalog to note if there is a only a link FROM wikipedia? If this is the case there would be no need to report here in LibriVox that there is a link from wiki to librivox right? I'm updating wikipedia pages now and wondering if I should post the results here. What do you think?

Hi ekzemplaro,

Thanks for the info. on links. I have updated the beginning post in this thread. I am requesting folks to post notifications in this thread if there is no link from LibriVox to wikipedia. In this way there is no need to add a new value to your list.

If a lack of a link of this kind is found, hopefully an admin will come along, take note of its absence, and modify the LibriVox page.

If there is a link to the author page, but there is no book page at wikipedia, would that be a 1 or a 0?

The entering of the links at wikipedia was really easy and fast, it got tedious checking all the versions if links exist to wikipedia.

Hello Timoleon san and mahne san,

Thank you for your reports.
I updated the information.
Please check at http://ekzemplaro.org/librivox/catalog/

For the moment it is "0", as we are thinking about works.

If a copy of the database were available, it could be easily done using SQL.
But for the moment a copy of the database is not available.

Masa, Timoleon, and Mahne;

When you come across these please make a list which includes the wikipedia link in order to make it easier to do the updates.

For example:
b5924 Mystery Of Cloomber
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Mystery_of_Cloomber

b8278 Red Headed League
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Adventure_of_the_Red-Headed_League
