Have you thought of using the wiki for the volunteers sign-up stuff?

I looked to volunteer to listen to a chapter of something, and I read through a few threads of "need this" "got this" "finished this" before giving up because I was tired of tracking what was done or not.

On a wiki page, one could collaboratively edit what is done or not.

You should only need to read the first post, as the book coordinator will edit it to show what chapters have been claimed. In fact, the book coordinator is really the only person who needs to read every post on the thread! :)

Thanks. This should be in the listener FAQ.

It does say to read the posts before you to make sure someone hasn't already claimed one you've claimed, but this is also right before it...

"Read the initial post in that thread where specific details will be given."

You really only need to read the first post, and the last two or three posts. I say the last two or three, because sometimes you get to the thread before the coordinator has had a chance to check it and update the first post.

As suggested, I have updated the Listeners FAQ in the Listeners & Editors Wanted forum. It now reads:
How does it work?
Whenever there is a project in need of "proof-listening", a thread will be created in "Listeners & Editors Wanted". Within the thread, chapters and links to the files will be included in the first post, similar to chapters in our recording projects in "Readers Wanted". Volunteers may then claim chapters with which to assist by posting a reply in the project thread. When they have finished listening, they post their suggestions (or a note that there are no problems) in the same project thread.
Listeners only need to read the first post in each thread, which is updated by person who started the topic. Before claiming a chapter for listening, please also read the last couple of posts to ensure the thread keeper has had a chance to update the first post and that others have not claimed the chapter before you.
The last paragraph is new. Thanks for pointing this out, Dan.

Here's a note to fellow volunteers. If anyone has some free time, it would be great to set up a wiki page about footnotes. I already have one wiki page that I need to do soon (and no time lately!), so I can't do it.

Here's a thread regarding footnotes: http://librivox.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=2236
