I'm guilty of regularly checking those various talk pages, so I saw that posted as soon as you posted probably.

I am glad this issue is finally solved Hugh. I was afraid that the excitment might lead to the abandonment of wikipedia as a trusted resource.

=)

yay!

Its status as a trusted resource, for me, was never in question. The quality of its community was.

Hehe, yep, that was me Hugh, as I said in my wiki Talk page, I'm so sorry! I had terrible timing indeed! Guess that teaches me not to keep up on goings on over here eh?

I'm happy it all worked out though and I guess I ought to look over the Readers Wanted section to find my 3rd reading selection for Librivox :)

hey yakumo,
agree with kri, it wasn't the resource, it was the admin system. the admin was stubborn. me too. but it took another admin who was much less agressive to explain the WHY of the policy - that part was missing. now that I understand it, it all makes sense.

I've been a Wikipedia volunteer for a long time ... not a super-dedicated one, but involved in the project for over six months now. While I think Mel is being a dick about this, there IS a good reason for not letting people affiliated with an external site propagate their material willy-nilly through the 'pedia without being an established Wikipedia member first.

While LibriVox is "the good guys," as far as content and motivation is concerned, there's a slippery slope between letting Librivox put up 50+ links in rapid succession, and having another site with free content (but that makes ad revenue) argue "but they got to do it," and then having ... and so on.

So it's a pain in the arse hoop to jump through, but it's not irrational. I don't think Mel is being a jumped-up rules baron as much as erring on the side of caution... the "big shot" editors at Wikipedia also tend to get a sense of ownership for the project, too. They shouldn't, but they do. That guy spends like 12+ hours a day on Wikipedia, and he and his peers have a sort of "we know best" approach to things that can be a real turn-off. Often because they are right, but real pricks about how they go about things.

At any rate: I've been a Wikipedia member longer than a LibriVox member, so I imagine I could add things. But I'm going to go about it at about a link or two a week, and only for 'vox recordings I've listened to personally. And add a note to the Talk pages of the respective entries explaining why I'm adding that link when I do so. Hope it helps.

I think the real problem was with Mel, the whole time. He did a piss poor job of explaining why what we were doing was wrong, and he did it in a piss poor manner.

hi shep, actually we should probably get rid of all these posts re: wikipedia except the outcome. the documented controversy doesn't add much.

it *seemed* irrational at the time, but i (we) get it now ... it just took some time discussing with a different admin to understand. Mel was sort of dismissive... but it doesn't really matter in the long run.

MY problem is that now lots of good content that wikipedia users should have access to is no longer linked to. but, if wiki volunteers can add the links (since we can't) all the better for everyone.

just for the record... I log in to Wikipedia and post a note in the discussion about the librivox recording on the actual book page.... and if there isn't a book page, I create a brief one using the introduction from our catalog... then post a note about the LV recording.
