There are not that many memoirs that are out of copyright - I know, my father landed on Gallipoli so I have searched.
And the Australian War Museum has a very good collection of photos available - I have used them when appropriate.

Tricia, would you please re-post the link to that little app you shared that lists all the fonts one has. Mine is locked in my old computer hard drive at the moment.

The Seven Lively Arts has a great frontispiece here: https://www.gutenberg.org/files/66294/66294-h/images/i_002.jpg

Other than fitting it onto a cover straight up, I don't think I could do much with it, though. Maybe someone else can do more with it. Does anyone else want to take it on?

I am not sure ...the authors year of death may interfere with the pictures rights for me. But i suggest to colorize it?

The illustrator is apparently Ralph Barton, who died in 1931: https://www.askart.com/artist/Ralph_Barton/28583/Ralph_Barton.aspx

So you're probably safe. 8-)
