Hi!

Please review my 1-min test via the link below. Following the test link are additional setup and voiceover notes as FYI.

Test link:
https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/test_andrewsproule.mp3

Setup Notes:
-DAW used: Studio One Professional
-Mix notes: light EQ, light compression, light Gate, minimal noice-reduction, no limiter, I also sent a very small portion of original audio track to a reverb bus with small-room settings before sending both original audio and roomverb to master bus.
-Gear: SM58 -> Grace m101 preamp -> Scarlett A/I -> iMac -> DAW (I recorded using several mics including concdensers, dynamics, and a ribbon, but since I'll likely always have my SM58 with me for Librivox recordings, I thought I'd run the SM58 sample through to keep it simple. Please advise if it's worth uploading multiple takes with different mics and different mixes/full raw/etc.)

V/O Notes:
-I'm a producer, but have always been super disappointed in my vocal artist abilities. I'm more than open to recommendations per speaker notes, as well as, production notes.

Thanks for your help!
Andrew

Hi and welcome to Librivox. Your reading is great there are just some edits needed please. However as I am only familiar with Audacity for recording I am not able to advise how you would carry out the edits. I have put in the instructions for using Audacity if you decide you wish to use the software as it is one that we use here and it is free to download. You might need to ask for further help depending on which software you are using.

The bit rate should be 128 kbps. When you export the file change ‘quality’ to 128kbps.

The recording should use a constant bit rate. When you export the file change ‘bit rate mode’ to ‘constant’

The recording should be in mono not stereo

The volume is 69dB which is too low. We aim for between 86-92 dB but ideally we would like it to be at 89 dB.
In Audacity you will also find the option to amplify under 'effects'.
How to amplify in Audacity: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z_z607awyLw
If you like you can use the checker tool to verify volume and other settings.
https://cgjennings.ca/projects/checker/

If you are using Audacity, here is a video one of our volunteers made on how to set up your tech specs: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l00VDvGTieg

It would help if you could remove some of the background noise to do this carry out the following. Once you increase the volume there is some background noise. Again I only know how to do this in Audacity so you may have to ask for advice on here depending on which software you are using.

Step 1 - Select a piece of background noise
Select a piece of background noise (no speech, breaths or other noises) in your audio.
In Menu click: Effect > Noise Reduction... A dialog will pop up.
Click "Get Noise Profile" The dialog box will close instantly.

Step 2 - Noise Reduction
Press CTRL-A / Command-A to select your complete recording.
In Menu click: Effect > Noise Reduction... again. Note: don't select "Repeat Noise Reduction" -- that instantly applies the default settings; you want to adjust the settings and preview the results before you apply the noise filters.

Set Noise Reduction (dB) to 12
Set sensitivity to 6.00
Set frequency smoothing bands to 3
Choose Noise: Reduce
Click ok
This should solve the problem. Always make sure you listen to files through headphones so that you can notice any background noise that needs removing. I have tried this setting on your file and it works. It would be good for you to do this yourself so that you can hear the difference.

Please could you carry out the edits then upload the file using the same file name. If you need any more help please just ask. Thanks

Hi wib66,

Thanks so much for listening! All makes sense. I'll use Audacity to edit and re-upload.

Thanks again,
Andrew
