Hello everyone,

I recorded my 1-minute test using audacity. Can someone please help me by listening to my test and giving me feedback? Thank you very much.

Welcome!

It sounds good! However, there are 3 tech settings to adjust:

1) The recording is in stereo. To change all future recordings, go to Edit, Preferences, Devices. Under Recording, change Channels to "1 (Mono)".

2) Your volume is too low. Visually, you should aim for your wave forms to peak near the 0.5 mark, like this:

Make sure the microphone slider in the Audacity window is all the way up. Also, have you increased your input volume in Windows/OS yet? Here's a link to instructions: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Audacity_1-2-3#Volume

3) Bit rate is variable; it needs to be 128 constant. This is set when you export to MP3. When you go to export, on the screen where you enter the file name for the MP3, change the Bit Rate mode to Constant, and the quality should be 128 kbps. You should only have to set it once; it'll remember the setting until you change it again.

Try making these adjustments, then post another test. Use the same file name as your previous one, and post in this same thread when it's ready. :)

It's in mono, and the bit rate is correct!

The volume is still too low. It needs to come up about 6 dB. I suppose you could simply amplify all your recordings by 6, but it would be better to set the input level higher to start with. :) Can you move the mic slider up, maybe 2 full notches?

There's a plugin for Audacity that will tell you how much to amplify your recordings, or how far off you are from "ideal" volume. It's called ReplayGain. Instructions for installing and using it are on this page: https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=Measuring_Volume_within_Audacity

It's definitely louder! But now it's too loud.

Can you make it somewhere in the middle of the two levels?

Hi,

Yes, I adjusted the volume. I posted a reading and got the feedback that it was too loud. I think it is fixed now.

Thank you for your support.
