Here is the link for my recording: https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/test_patrs.mp3

My current setup is using audacity, on Windows 10 Operating system and a Blue Yeti USB microphone.

I am reading the following poem I found online:

Could you tell us a bit about the poem? any idea when it was written? members needed to be careful about downloading copyright material from our site and I can't date the poem.

I came across this poem on this website https://www.thestudentroom.co.uk/showthread.php?t=203447, it seemed to be written just to have a poem be 1 minute long. Let me know if this raises an issue.

I don't really know - that is outside my expertise, it would have been safer to use the one we give. I'm assuming the site would object if I used it on an educational site I was running but whether they would for the way you are using it I'd need to be an international copyright lawyer to know.

So will the recording be removed? And will I get another chance to do a 1 minute test?

Welcome!

The 1-minute test doesn't really have to be 1 minute. :) The suggested text we have in the wiki, most people read in 20-30 seconds. I listened to some of the recording, but not all of it. We'll delete your initial recording, so that it won't be in danger of distribution online. ;) And I'll remove the poem text from your post.

Anyway...

Your settings are all correct, but you have a fair amount of background noise. Is your recording area quiet? If you could prevent some of the sounds from reaching the mic in the first place, it would be best. After that, second best is do so some noise reduction.

Here are a couple resources:
text instructions: http://wiki.librivox.org/index.php/Noisecleaning_With_Pics
video, but with an older version of Audacity so the settings are different: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFSg9o37HMw

My settings are as follows:
Noise reduction: 10-16 (I suggest about 16 for you, unless you can get the noise down by quieting the recording area)
Sensitivity: 6
Frequency Smoothing: 6

Try making these adjustments, then post another test. You can use the text in our wiki, if you like. That's easiest (although appears to be a tongue twister). https://wiki.librivox.org/index.php?title=1-Minute_Test

Use the same file name as your previous test, and post in this same thread when it's ready. :)

The noise is gone, but your volume dropped down a significant amount.

Did you select some of your voice for the first step, where you made the noise profile? If so, that told Audacity to identify your voice as noise, and it then removed some of your voice as if it were noise.

For the first step, make sure to only select a part where the mic is on but you are not speaking.

If that's not what happened, then we need to figure out why your volume dropped so much. :hmm:

I believe in this recording I forgot to apply the normalize effect because I thought it would save that setting.

Would you like to submit another test noise-cleaned and normalized, or are you comfortable that you will have both things right at the same time? :)

Here is my latest recording, I did make it louder and used the volume checker application I found on the wiki to make sure. https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/test_patrs.mp3
