Hello Michelle and a warm welcome to the forum :)

thank you for starting with a one-minute test. I just had a listen to your file and your narrative voice and quality is absolutely nice to listen to. :9: Nothing to change there.

I would have one suggestion to improve on the background noise, which is a bit disturbing in your file. Audacity has a good noise-cleaning function, which you can run over your finished file to make it sound more clean:

> select a small portion where you don't speak (usually at the end of your file)
> go to Effect - Noise Reduction
> first select Get Noise Profile
> then highlight the entire recording
> again Effect - Noise Reduction
> now select OK

And what we definitely need to change is one of the basic technical settings. Your bitrate is variable but should be 128 kbps constant. This is done in the phase where you export to mp3.

Since you are using Audacity, here is the step-by-step to change this setting:

> go to File / Export Audio
> open Options in the lower right corner
> select the following settings: Bit Rate Mode: Constant / Quality: 128 kbps
> press Ok

Could you do those two changes to your current test (no need to re-record, I'd rather you learnt the ropes for Audacity but correcting your old test) and reupload in this same thread so I can have another listen ?

Thanks !

Sonia

ah that was fast, thanks !!! Yes, now the bitrate is correct. There is still a bit of noise, so you may want to check to find the source of it, maybe a fan or an open window letting in traffic. But for all intents and purposes, this is a totally nice recording.

Your test is OK. You are free to roam the forum and start recording for real

Have fun, and maybe one day soon I'll hear you in one of the projects I'm prooflistening :9:

Many thanks!
I'll try to check out the background noise. Great to see a bit more how Audacity works. Thank you for your help!
