Hi. Here's my 1 minute test. https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/test_sereneitty.mp3

I use Audacity 2.2.2, Windows 8, and a USB mic.

I wasn't sure if the background noise on the original one was too loud and tried using Audacity's noise reduction function to reduce it: https://librivox.org/uploads/tests/test_sereneitty_v2.mp3

It's my 1st time doing a recording. So please do feel free to tell me if there's anything I can improve on. Thanks!

Hi Sereneitty -

Welcome to Librivox!

I listened to the 2nd recording which is almost perfect! The only thing you need to do is increase the volume a bit in Audacity - which is really easy to do. Sometimes, like you mentioned, you try and get rid of background noise, it will reduce your volume so you do have to check for that.

So open the 2nd recording and then select the whole recording (Ctrl - A) and then go to the Effect menu item and pick Amplify. Your recording is at 83.3 dB and the range that we require is 89dB +/- 3dB. So the low end is 86dB. Type in 5 in the window to increase your volume (overwrite the 10.22) and press OK.

Now Export your recording to MP3.

Next, this is a tool that some of us at Librivox use to check our recording levels prior to submitting for proof listening (what I am doing for you). https://cgjennings.ca/checker.html If you install it and then run the little application and go to File and find your saved Recording file you should now get a PASSED!

Please post the newly exported file back to this thread so I can check it too and if you have passed you can go forward and record for Librivox!

Great test recording Serenity!

You have gotten your volume up to the correct level and have all your settings correct!

You are now okay to go record for Librivox - go explore the forums and find some book chapters/sections you wish to record!

Have fun -

Yay! Thanks, Lynda! Your instructions on what to do were very clear, and that helped a lot.
