about 46 seconds actually, counting intro, the text from the wiki, and then blank space.

This is totally unprocessed -- I haven't recorded anything in ages. I remember I used to do a noise-reduction, plus there was some filter that was recommended that I always did that was quite helpful. I hope I positioned my mic in a good place -- I used to know the perfect distance.
Mic = Yeti Blue, with a pop filter in front.
Audacity = 2.0.5
Computer = Windows 7 (I managed to resist 10).

All of this is the same as the setup I had in 2015 when I was previously an active recorder, in the same room, etc. Thank you!

Welcome back!

I found an old thread of yours: viewtopic.php?f=23&t=56241
in which you mention you use the Notch Filter and Noise Cleaning/Removal.

I ran your file with the notch filter settings you mentioned (120, 5.0) and then did noise removal at:

Noise reduction: 14
Sensitivity: 6
Frequency Smoothing: 6

and it came out nicely, IMHO.

Originally, the volume was a bit loud, but after doing the notch and noise effects, the volume snuggled right down to an acceptable level.

Thank you so much! NOTCH filter -- I couldn't remember that term as I scrolled through that huge list. (Is there a way to shortcut the frequently used options?)

Here's me running the same processing you mentioned. (Often I do a noise-reduction by sampling the silent bit at the end and running that as a comparison version, but I did it by the numbers you specified instead.)

If this is still a touch loud, I can move the mic back an inch or so. Any other comments? I can pull the curtain (sound absorbing) closed if there's echo from the window.

Hmm. The volume is louder on yours than on mine, when I did the same thing. Yeah, move the mic slider down maybe one full notch. That should do it, I think. Other than that, it's A-OK.

Regarding customizing the effects: the answer is "maybe". :lol: I don't have your version of Audacity, so I can't tell. When you go to Effects, do you have an "Add/Remove Plugins" or "Enable effects" or "Manage effects" option, either at the very top or very bottom? If so, you can go in there and disable ones that you don't use. This will at least shorten the list, even though it doesn't move the most-used ones to the top.

Recorded a fresh bit of text, applied the same filters (noise, notch) afterwards, but before-hand, I moved my mic input from .86 to .76

Volume is practically perfect.

And you speak my words well. 8-)
